Specter vs. Ridge?
Someone on the radio was suggesting the Republicans might try to draft Tom Ridge to run.

Isn't Ridge *gasp* a moderate Republican too?

Isn't he still pretty popular in PA? Could be interesting.

1. Ridge is pro-choice, isn't he? The right-wing didn't let McCain pick him as veep.

9. He can run all he wants to
He won't beat Toomey in a Primary.

3. Yes. Ridge s pro-choice which is the reason the RW wouldn't
let McNuts pick him as a VP running mate. The reason his name is floated is because he's very well known in PA. and of all the people I know there, I never heard anyone say they HATED HIM!

5. I wonder whether PA republicons could vote for pro-choice Ridge
in a primary. The reason Ridge won his first gubanatorial primary was because of a crowded field--he only had 35% of the vote and then sailed past a weak Democrat to win the general election. If it's just him vs. Toomy, I don't know that he can win it, even with the name recognition and money behind him.

7. I guess it will depend on how stubborn the remaining Republicans are
If they realize that Toomey could never win, maybe Ridge could win. Otherwise, you could be right.

6. He would likely be in the same primary situation
Tough to win against a far right candidate. The GOP is in an interesting quandary in many of these purplish or bluish states, and PA is the most obvious one. The GOP is radicalized enough where a far right candidate will win a primary but get stomped in a general election by a Dem. Thats a byproduct of becoming so fringe that you eat up all the moderates in your party and put yourselves way out of whack with everybody else. Specter was pretty much the last of his kind in the GOP.

8. Toomey would beat Ridge in a Primary in 2010
Edited on Tue Apr-28-09 08:44 PM by AllentownJake
Remember the last time Ridge ran for anything in PA was 1998. The Pennsylvania Republican Party looks a lot different than it did in 1998.

Also remember, Ridge was head of Homeland Security, there is a lot of ammo there.

10. people here really like Ridge -I also think Bush tapped him for his
admin to get him out of the way.

There are some pretty well known moderate Reps here- sometimes we joke that the moderate Reps, esp. the pro-choice ones, can be more liberal than some of the conservative Dems! What a strange state we live in...
