1. I was wondering the same thing.
Royal blue is for the Ph.D.

9. I knew someone who had a JD from Georgetown and his hood
was dark blue.

I know this because I helped hem it.

Mine is blue, but not as dark as his, my friend's was.

So, I'm no help at all.

11. Mine is royal, the color in the picture. I prefer the darker blue,
which used to be the Ph.D. color. Less flashy. I loathe the Ed.D colors.

12. Have to be honest. I don't know what the Ed.D color is.
I never paid much attention. The only person I know with an Ed.D is someone I loathe, so, well, you know, LOL.

35. It's not only about an honorary degree you might get, but also about what you've earned.
Thus the various garb worn by faculty at these affairs.

I suppose conferring an honorary degree provides the speaker with an ostensible reason to wear the regalia.

Not sure how those pretensions work.

Maybe he didn't wear the purple because he didn't want to rub it in (as some of us might have liked to).

16. Correct!
The academic hood is comprised of a fabric shell (usually black), "degree velvet" and "school lining".

The velvet of the doctoral hood represents your degree.
For a Ph.D., the degree velvet is rich royal blue, or PhD blue.

28. But an SJD, Obama's degree, rates PhD purple
The SJD is one of three law degrees one may earn from Harvard Law, the one that best prepares one to teach law, and the one that Obama earned.

for the JD program and then took the additional courses for his SJD thus he wears PhD Blue.

In fact, I don't even think there were SJD's when he graduated law school- only LLM's.

32. Harvard Law has 3 degree programs
JD- (Juris Doctor) three year program

LLM - one year program mostly for those who obtained a law degree in a foreign country

SJD (Doctor of Juridical Science) requires submission and defense of a dissertation established in the 1920s and revamped in late 1980s three to five years (3 years course work and up to 2 additional years to complete and defend dissertaiton.) Charles Houston, the first Black on the Harvard Law Review recieved his Harvard JD in '22 and SJD in '23. (source Black Presence at Harvard an Overview by Caldwell Titcomb)

34. Must have just started then when Obama graduated- however, his degree is a JD, not and SJD
this bit was all gone over in the primaries, where some tried to claim that he wasn't credentialed enough to to teach.

It's so that he can send a signal to the Illuminati to activate the alien technology at Area 51, which makes all the security strips in American money download your DNA to the tracking satellites that were secretly launched on 9/11, when everyone was distracted by the Atlantean missiles that attacked us.
