He's not your average Republican. If Republicans have any sense, he could be a serious force in 2012. Sadly-for them-they do not, so they'll nominate Sarah or Bobby or Tim and lose 60/40%. As Kurt Vonnegut says...."and so it goes"

Congratulations, Ambassador Huntsman...

1. I'd rather defeat this type of republican in 2016
than a Palin/Jindal type. At least this type will be pushing us to the left.

2. Exactly....At least we would be facing a serious opponent in a serious election....
But I'll be happy to beat whoever they choose to offer up in 2016 and later....

3. Well there might be a little conflict-of-interest...
Edited on Sat May-16-09 01:26 AM by Baby Snooks
His family's fortunes aren't what they used to be and his family's fortunes might improve through his being appointed ambassador to China in terms of the existing business ties to China.

Some in Congress may in fact question those ties. And the potential conflict-of-interest. Some in Congress should.

He is also a Republican with ties to the Bushes. Quite a few would prefer a Democrat without ties to the Bushes.

4. The only defense I can offer is that the Chinese seem to have very long
memories, institutional memories that will look back at the First Bush White House and the way they handled the student uprising as a way to pay back the Bush family.

It's weak but hey, it quarter to three in the morning.

7. There's a reason...(Huntsman)
The reason the Huntsman "family fortune" isn't what it used to be is that they donate gazillions to charity, most notably to the Huntsman Cancer Foundation. The family fortune doesn't seem to interest the family very much; they seem to find charity work a lot more fascinating.

Seriously good people, that family. I'd be shocked if anyone on DU donated even half as much -- on a percentage basis; I know for fact nobody here can match 'em dollar for dollar -- as the Huntsmans. Give 'em props.

12. Cindy McCain gave lots to charity.
Things are not always what they seem.

16. I don't know what percentage the family donates
But if it's as great a percentage as you imply, I'd have to guess that I'd be in the poor house if I donated as much. So, it's an odd comparison for you to make.

5. If the Republicans keep fucking things up for 8 years...
Then nobody with an 'R' after their name will be a viable candidate in 2016. Too many people will be firmly grounded as voting for Democrats, any Democrat, by that point.

in his speech this morning.

8. Ugh. A proselytizing religious person heading to the PRC. Not smart.
Can you imagine how happy Israel would be to learn that the new American Ambassador was a Christian who not only thought all Jews were going to hell, but had proselytized in the mideast for his faith?
