And personally, I think that any Catholic student who is Pro-Choice should not receive a degree from Notre Dame University.

Tired of the religious hypocrits in respect to the death penalty vs.a woman's choice....
and tired of the divorced folks and the child abusing priests, etc., etc....

I even attended Catholic Elementary school...

I left the faith for good about 3 years ago....and I'm happy about it!

1. I am an atheist now, but like they say...
"Once a Catholic"...

I have no religious faith at all but consider myself to be "ethnic" Catholic.

I was raised too close to it.

It can never really go away, nor would I especially want it to....

Most Catholics are human and follow the rules that suit their souls.

3. I was with the nuns for years (in boarding school)............am now Episcopalian.
The Catholic Church must surely be responsible for so many children and adults lying on psychiatrists' couches!

Too ideological, too hypocritical, too phony.

24. As one who went Methodist, Catholic, and back to the UMC
I like visiting Episcopalian churches when I feel the need to get my liturgy on :-) It's comforting to me sometimes.

And any denomination willing to formally recognize Thurgood Marshall as a saint can't be all bad.

19. I had to go to a Catholic wedding a couple years ago and sitting through that thing nearly killed me
It was HORRIBLY retro and sexist (even though the couple is young and hip -- go figure). The priest was going on about the "woman being man's helpmate" bullshit and I wanted to stand up and yell "Hey, priest: Shut the fuck up!" and then turn to the rest of the crowd and yell "Why do you people continue to support this utter bullshit?!" I think I had steam coming out of my ears. :grr:

32. believe it or not
your friends actually had a choice regarding all that sexist talk. i got married in the church, and we got to choose our priest and which prayers were said. maybe it has changed in the 10 years since my wedding, but i come from a very liberal, progressive catholic community, and there was nothing like that in my marriage ceremony.

6. Can the catholic faithful do something about thier clergy and leaders?
This is 2009. I can't believe there are still churches who think they can tell people what to do, who to vote for. The whole thing is crazy to me.

7. We need a second Catholic Reformation
The clerics are just too powerful.

And they hold to their power no matter what.

The coverup of the child-raping was just the most obvious and egregious case of this.

We need a much more powerful non-clerical governing presence in the Church.

I think it is time for the laity rise up and demand their share over oversight and control over the day to day running of the church.

Time to open the windows and let the fresh air in.

25. History 101
The Protestant Reformation of the 16th century, which some hoped would prompt real reforms in the Roman Church, prompted an official response which is often called the "Counter-Reformation," but which is also known as the "Catholic Reformation" (Council of Trent, etc).

Of course, there was a second reform in the era of Vatican II, but some liberal Catholics consider this to have been incomplete, especially in relation to reform of the clerical power structure.

27. from what i can see, churches over here tend to just ignore certain aspects of the catholic
church's policies. almost like a don't ask don't tell kind of thing, i guess. i could be wrong. if they didn't do this, they wouldn't have any congregation, i don't think. they wonder why they don't have people entering the priesthood or nunnery and they are losing parishoners left and right. keep going down that backwards path.... that'll fix it.

john paul II seemed to be trying to modernize the church somewhat.... this new clown seems to be trying to bring it backwards again. I can't stand when they show him on tv, frankly... makes me physically ill. i don't understand why people think they need an intermediary.... a middle man.... and don't forget to tithe.... how else can the pope and his bishops wear all those nice clothes and have all that princely stuff.

except not go and give our money... thus, i've not been a "good" catholic since my priest had to read us a letter from the archbishop the week the sex abuse scandals came to light telling us we need to move on and just forgive the priests.

11. Is this about the Notre Dame brou-ha-ha?
I'm sorry the media is giving so much attention to the anti-Obama Catholic crowd. There's LOTS of Catholics who support his speaking there. In my opinion---and I'm a recently come back to the fold Catholic---Obama is one of the most Catholic presidents we've had in a long time because he holds so many values that the Catholic church does. I'm thinking social justice, for instance. Catholics who aren't narrow-minded in their views realize this.

I've read that most of the protests on Pres. Obama's appearance at Notre Dame is coming from people outside the university. That seems very likely to me.

Seems like CNN knows how to report on nonsense protests quite well.
Considering all of those protests against George Bush that they totally ignored....
wondered how that happened?

I'm proud a majority of those who share my faith voted for Pres. Obama. I'm proud a majority of my fellow Catholics approve of the job he's doing and I'm proud of Notre Dame -- a school I grew up cheering for -- is not backing down in the face of extremism.

They decided to be an agent against change, and regress to the Middle Ages. They are trying their damndest to undue Vatican II with these right-wing authoritarians they put on the Chair.

Easy decision on my part.

But, then again, it was worse. I was raised in a fundie Baptist church, of the Falwell variety.

Got out of that once I learned to think for myself.

Unfortunately, the wife is still a Catholic.

My grandmother was rabidly Church of Christ and succeded in forcing many of my immediate and
extended family into that church. Her mortal enemies were the Catholics("they worship the Pope!")
and Baptists("they allow musical accompanyment during services!"..."they're ALL going to HELL!").
I'll tell you what hell is, It's having to hear thar shit for years!;-)

26. i like to call myself a a recovering catholic.
though, i was never there willingly. it's sort of like smoking where it's the habits that are the hardest part of it to break. I went to catholic school.... I have no respect for the church in general but there are people in it who are there to do good things. I kind of laugh at their whole delusions of moral high ground. how many decades did they protect pedophiles in their ranks..... what wars have they started or been involved in.... look into their history and you can damn well tell that their hands are not even close to being clean... yet they have the balls to throw stones.... personally, i think that were jesus here today he would have nothing to do with the catholic church. they have people worshiping the pope, basically.... which if i am not mistaken is in direct conflict with their teachings. they want to have to be the middle man. i always wondered about that, because if jesus is inside of all of us, as i was taught.... why do i need to go through a priest?

if a student wants to go to ND, why shouldn't they? it's their money and they aren't getting a degree in catholic doctrine. as far as i know, there is nothing a student has to sign stating they are catholic and will abide by all the rules. non-catholics go there, so why shouldn't progressive catholics?
