1. Thanks! I'll have this on background while I work tomorrow.
1 hour long, and based on the first few minutes that I did watch, should be fascinating!

5. Um, did you watch the video? They're talking about green sustainable capitalist energy.
This is an important discussion.

3. I hope someday they can put a Cabinet meeting up on Youtube
Of course it would not be the "real" thing, and all the national security stuff would have to be redacted, but one can hope.

4. He was misinformed 8 minutes in.
Energy R&D is not dwarfed by the listed associations. *Green* energy R&D, maybe, not not energy R&D as a whole. I believe context gives the guy a pass, but just barely.

6. "International" copout about green energy.
Take that guy off the board (12 minutes in). Green is about *us* not everyone else. We lead, they follow (because we *stop dealing with* non-green energy).

8. Back to "international option." At least he's conceding we can go at it from a leadership POV.

But his language is very wishwashy (22 minutes).

not Obama, the guy talking

9. Finally panned the whole table, Chu isn't there.
Chu needs to have a say here. This is explicitly energy related. Most of these guys seem to be CEOs.

12. Obama: "We expect that there's going to be stabalizing of the economy...
<...> the concern that we have is that even in a stablized situation that there is a prospect of higher unemployeement for some time to come, so I've really been pushing my economic team around job creation, and, alongside job creation <...> upgrade jobs and upgrade incomes <...> so those are two areas that we're spending a lot of time thinking about <...> clean energy is a great opportunity for that."

Thank you Mr. President. Around 39 minutes.

Sorry for spelling errors, I transcribed as he was talking.

13. Panelist: "Moving to a carbon based green economy can create jobs..."
Edited on Thu May-21-09 04:22 AM by joshcryer
Obama's side of the table is much more agreeable. :D

edit to clarify she was on the opposite side of the table I thought she was on his side, so she's the first one on the other side to agree with green = job creation

14. Panelist: "We don't need trade restrictions..."
Translation: "Fuck cap and trade! We are service industry based and it would kill us."

Panelist: "We can increase our manufacturing base, but it's not realistic to actually expect it to build jobs."

Translation: "We like service industry because it makes us lots of fucking profit and it destroys our ability to actually matter on a global scale. We want poor laborers overseas working their asses off for us so we can make as much money as possible."

The theory that Obama's side of the table was good was misguided. I suppose they were randomly placed.

Panelist: "Where we build our wind turbines isn't up to us, because our manufacturing ability sucks, we are service industry."

Translation: "Repeat what I just said a minute ago, fuck being manufacturers."

15. Smart CEO: "Small companies are our manufacturers."
"It's very important that we look at global manufacturing capacity. We have got to shift the paradigm."

Fuck yeah. I was hating on this guy for the "international copout" earlier but his statement was spot on here.

16. Vockler: It's going to take a lot of investment over time. But I think we can make that investment."
"The cost of what happens if we don't do anything it's going to cost amounts of money with the stuff we're talking about trivial!"

Obama: "I haven't found anything that is easy politically."

Good stuff.

17. 1 in a million. 302 views as I post this. I was one of those views. 1 out of every million people...
...in the US watched that video. Actually, given that the video is available internationally, the statistics are probably far more bleak than that.

Unfortunate to say the least.

18. My review. Done bumping the thread, sorry for continuing to bump it as I watched.
It was quite insightful all around. I wanted to hear more technical jargon, but it was OK that it wasn't excessively bandided about. I have to accept that most of these people don't know the technical side of things, they only know how to make the money flow in their respective areas.

Obama took complete control of the discussion, the panel was "Vockler's" but Obama really did the leading with regards to discussion. This is how it should be in my opinion. Many of the panelists wanted Obama to take a leadership position with regards to a green capitalist economy, and use his position as a respected world leader to bring international cooperation on the table.

Enjoyed it.

Now go watch and get that view count up.

21. THAT is where Baucus's secret health care task force meetings ought to be...
...on YouTube, CSPAN and wherever else. There should be NO part of these discussions we the people are shut out of and CERTAINLY not single-payer or public option advocates.

Now, THAT would be transparent government.
