"Gore sharply criticizes Bush on Terrorism Policy" with NO MEDIA COVERAGE
Edited on Thu May-21-09 01:04 PM by YvonneCa
Why did the media give a FORMER Vice President (Cheney) wall-to-wall coverage of his speech on terrorism this morning? Why is THIS Vice President given such priviledge...especially at this critical time in our history? I contend he does not deserve it, and it will only further divide the country and prevent our current President from being successful.

I obviously support President Obama and his policies. But I have to tell you that my outrage today is because of media unfairness.

I turned on MSNBC this morning to see FORMER Vice President Dick Cheney making his case for war and torture...AGAIN...WITH FULL MEDIA COVERAGE. So I switched to CNN...and there he was again. Fox? You get the idea.

What about Vice President Al Gore's speeches about the run-up to the Iraq War? Why didn't the media cover THOSE? During the run-up to the war in Iraq, former Vice President Al Gore was speaking out against it...and a citizen had to either read his speeches online, or (in the case of later speeches) buy them from C-Span and play them on a DVD player. NO ONE covered him...let alone broadcast his speeches live.

This kind of media coverage, in my opinion, is ridiculous and unfair. We had an election in November, 2008, and elections matter. So does fairness. Either cover BOTH former Vice Presidents, or cover neither one.

So, now that Cheney is 'all over the airwaves', what do we do to be more fair? I suggest a broadcast (I'd say 're-broadcast' but they never covered it in 2006 :7) of Al Gore's speech...given in 2006 at Constitution Hall in Washington D.C. You can find it at c-span.org.

2. Yes, they did. ABSOLUTELY. It was awful and very...
...demeaning to citizens who agreed with him about the war. Thanks for your post.

4. wouldn't publicize Gore and wouldn't broadcast Kerry's speeches attacking Bush as the Dem nominee.
The media gave little to no airtime to Gore and Kerry's criticisms from 2001-2006 while lavishing all the airtime they could on Bill Clinton and Joe Lieberman's support for Bush's policies.

7. Exactly. And they should not get away with continuing this...
...practice in the name of 'we report, you decide', 'keeping them honest', or whatever today's slogan is. I hope Democrats who care about this start emailing and writing letters to these people.

What Cheney did today is divisive. If we're going to have a duel...let's cover ALL the players. JMHO.

6. Because the corporate media don't care about the people.
De facto, the American People are just customers or consumers to be sold a product or down the river to the corporate media; corporations are their clients and thus garner supreme allegiance.

This is one reason as to why you will almost never hear the corporate media refer to the American People as citizens, that is a word of empowerment signifying belonging and ownership. The corporate media don't want the American People; to know they own he government because the corporate media want to continue playing the middle man.

Thanks for the thread, YvonneCa.

Kicked and recommended.

9. Thank you for your kind words. And you are welcome...
...for the thread. You are very right that they rarely use the empowering word, 'citizen.' And, that's exactly why I use it often. :7

John Kerry gave a speech in 2005 where he spoke about citizenship. My favorite line is framed on my wall:

"There is no more important word, in my judgment, in the American language...other than 'love'...than 'citizen'. And we have a responsibility, all of us, to be good citizens."

IMO, citizens have a responsibility to get involved in their government. One way to do that is to speak out when something is not working...and our current media has a few problems.

12. Contrast how the media treats VP Gore to VP Cheney.
There's a remarkable contrast. It clearly shows a media bias that favors Cheney.

17. Gore's speeches were one reason we realized the media was the Republican
mouthpiece. Way back in2003 we didn't know the things we do now. We hadn't realized just how bad they had become. We saw it more and more with the Iraq war and the wall to wall cheerleading coverage it got. That's when we started calling the msm the propaganda arm of the Bush administration.

So this lack of coverage for Democrats and the over-coverage of the Republicans is pretty normal to us now. It would be noteworthy is they were to start being fair. THAT would be news.

21. Because Gore was a Sore Loserman and what not
:sarcasm:

Honestly, having got the most votes in an election only to have the Supreme Court decide in favor of your opponent has got to be one of the most awful experiences in the world.

The media has mocked him, taken his statements out of context, spread outright lies, and kicked him around relentlessly while he ran and afterward.
