3. I would bet serious money
that Kay Bailey Hutchison will vote for Judge Sotomayor as well. If KBH wants to be the next governor of Texas, she can't afford to alienate all of the Hispanic voters in her state.

In fact, I would be surprised if any of the Republican women vote against Sotomayor. Remember when they all voted for SOS Clinton?

13. I bet that all of the Republican Senators from Texas, Arizona and Florida
will all discover how reasonable Sotomayor is and vote for her.

Somebody has to remind them that they come from states with 30% Hispanic populations

14. They will consider Limbaugh's view of their vote first. He rules those people.

17. I have to wonder if Kyl and McCain really care
They are more righty then some of the others and probably going to vote the party line.

20. Kyl isn't up for re-election until 2012 so he'll oppose. McCain might decide to be "maverick-y"
and vote for her since he's up in 2010. At very least, I wouldn't be surprised to see McCain -- who was a member of the Gang of 14 -- oppose a filibuster but then oppose the nomination.

19. KBH has a problem: she needs the Hispanic vote in the general, but needs the base in the primary
I'm guessing that she toes the party line in hopes of holding the base even though it will hurt her in the general.

6. True. But Snowe has been very consistent. She actually didn't blame Specter for leaving.
She blamed the Republican party. Meaning, she'll vote for Sotomayor.

8. No she won't. Read her statement from earlier today.
She sounds like she is ready to support her.

And I don't think Mel Martinez will either. They can't filibuster Sotomayor.

12. The last two sentences are standard republican lines. No different that what I've heard
republican senators say. I'm not convinced that she won't join in a filibuster.

""May 26, 2009

Washington, D.C. -
In response to President Obama’s announcement to nominate U.S. appeals court Judge Sonia Sotomayor of New York to replace retiring justice David Souter on the U.S. Supreme Court, U.S. Senator Olympia J. Snowe (R-Maine) issued the following statement today:

"Indisputably, this is an historic selection, as Sonia Sotomayor is just the third woman to be nominated to The Court and the first Hispanic American. I commend President Obama for nominating a well-qualified woman, as I urged him to do during a one-on-one meeting on a variety of issues in the Oval Office earlier this month.

"I also appreciate that White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel called me personally this morning to inform me of the President's selection. As the process moves forward, I will apply the same standards of review that I have in the past -- that any Supreme Court nominee should bring a balanced approach to cases, possess a strong intellect and suitable judicial temperament, and follow a disciplined judicial methodology in reaching decisions. Justices on the High Court sit for life, so the Senate must exercise this constitutional duty thoughtfully, and give careful and thorough consideration to Judge Sotomayor, as it should to every nominee. I share the view that the proper role of the judiciary is one of interpreting the Constitution and acts of Congress, not legislating from the bench. As such, I will carefully evaluate Sonia Sotomayor’s record and temperament in making my determination.

18. there is no chance that Snowe will support a filibuster -- none, nada, zilch
In addition to the fact that she supported Sotomayor's confirmation as a court of appeals judge, Snowe was a member of the gang of 14. When Alito's nomination came up, all of the gang of 14 members voted for cloture -- even those that ultimately voted against the nomination. While I don't think Snowe will vote against the nomination, its a near mortal lock that she will not support a filibuster. Neither will Collins, which means that the chances of there being a filibuster are non-existent.
