Neighbor describes man who threatened president
By Pamela Manson
The Salt Lake Tribune
Updated: 06/05/2009 06:25:55 PM MDT

A former neighbor of a man who allegedly told a teller at a St. George bank that he was "on a mission" to kill President Barack Obama says the man was known as Cape Man and appeared to be mentally ill.

"A couple of years ago, we started noticing a guy walking down the street waving his arms and talking to himself," said Leighann Nastasia, who lives in Rexford, N.Y., about 20 miles north of Albany. "He wore a cape."

Nastasia said she never felt threatened by Daniel James Murray, 36, who lived with his parents two doors down from her home. She said there were religious items on the property, including a cross in the back yard that glowed in the dark, and that a car parked there had a personalized license plate that said Chosen 1.

<snip>

The complaint says there are at least eight firearms registered to Murray and that he drives a blue 2001 Buick LeSabre with New York license plate ERL 1445. Anyone who sees him or his vehicle should call local police.

2. Crazy people need to be able to protect themselves, too.
Someone has to protect us from The Reptoids that live under Mt. Shasta.

4. We don't.
Anybody that's been legally determined to be mentally ill is not allowed to handle a firearm.

There IS an existing law that covers this (Google "having weapons while under disability"). It's a felony.

8. but how many people are "legally mentally ill"?
Many people see psychiatrists and therapists, and they have mental illnesses. However, they
are not officially and legally declared mentally ill. I would think this would be a rare
occurrence. You'd have to be horrendously mentally ill, so much so, that you've tangoed
with law enforcement.

I would say that the mentally ill can own firearms...because there's no way to track mental
illness.

...but you can't restrict somebody's Constitutional rights based on arbitrary judgments.

13. mentally ill people can own firearms if they have never been hospitalized involuntarily
As you said, there is no way to track everyone who is legally mentally ill. So they developed what they thought was a good way of keeping firearms out of the hands of the most severely mentally ill. They decided that it would be easy to put the names of individuals who were committed to hospitals involuntarily or by court order on the list of those who shouldn't have access to firearms. This system has been shown to be deficient. For example, the Virginia Tech shooter was able to purchase a gun, because while he was diagnosed wtih schizophrenia and sent to intensive outpatient therapy he never has a court ordered hospitalization.

I am wondering if this guy who wants to kill Obama has been hospitalizeed many times as his father has reported, but has not had any involuntary hospitalization thus allowing him to buy all of these weapons.

5. The second commandment. "Thou shall not infinge upon the well regulated militias."
Edited on Sat Jun-06-09 08:45 AM by geckosfeet
Oh - I meant amendment - second amendment.

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

Any fool can see that his second amendment rights must be upheld so that he can keep our free state secure.

9. Beats hell out of me. And I say this as the daughter of a batshit crazy mom.
Even though she has never shown any violent tendencies, I am sure glad she doesn't know a damned thing about guns.

12. The $85,000 check was drawn on the Mountain America Credit Union
That credit union site says:

Credit Union History & Philosophy
History Of Mountain America
Mountain America's roots began in the mid 1930's as the credit union for Utah Telephone workers. The assets of this not-for-profit credit union have grown tremendously over the years. Mountain America has become the credit union of state and local government employees and some of Utah's leading corporations including:

>State of Utah Employees
>Questar
>AT&T
>QWest
>Novell

Interesting group of usual users there. Just who gave this guy $85,000? The parents? Why is not that being reported? Follow the money!
