4. If you meet with them face-to-face
that might be more effective. Even if just for a few seconds at an event.

Or stop by their office and meet with an aide.

Here's something I found from DFA: http://www.blogtalkradio.com/DemocracyForAmerica/2009/05/27/DFA-Night-School-Citizen-Lobbying-with-Howard-Dean

7. Or picket their office...
It is not an easy thing to get a meeting with a Senator, but you can always just show up at their office unannounced holding a sign that will make them squirm, and if you want to have real fun costumes get a lot of attention and if you use creativity to get your point across more people will notice. If we want to make change we need to embrace real democracy, that means showing the people in power that we are in charge and if they don't do what we want them to do we will hold them publicly accountable in very visible ways. The first amendment gives us tremendous power and we need to use that power.

6. Don't just call a phone number, get in the streets and protest
Calling a phone number is simple, but it is far from the most effective means of activism. To be effective you need to be more than a tally mark on a computer screen which a politician can easily choose to ignore, if you want to be effective you need to be noticed by the general public not just a White House phone operator. The way to be effective is to get out into the streets and protest in a very visible way, then you need to write about your experiences at the protest and be sure to be clear on why you are protesting. Post your experiences online and encourage others to get out and protest, once there are masses of people out in the streets it is going to be very difficult to ignore us in the same way that they can ignore our phone calls. The public never finds out about how many phone calls are received on each side of an issue, but they sure notice when they are driving home and they see a crowd of hundreds or thousands of people march by them.

8. It's still far more effective than complaining on a message board

11. I disagree, message boards can reach far more people than a phone call can
Literally thousands of people read many of the posts on DU, I have had blog posts that have reached tens of thousands of people and at least one of them resulted in a major victory for a cause of mine and even received some national attention. You would not believe the power that the internet can have if you know how to use it, certainly my blog posts have been far more effective than any phone call I have ever made.

9. I was fred up, that's why I voted
I was fed up. I did do something about it. I donated my time to Obama's campaign and voted for him. It was a lot of stress, wound up getting kidney stones.

Now when I'm fed up? I just turn off the tv, go hit the bong. There's no point.
