NYTimes: Democrats Seem Set to Go Alone on a Health Bill
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/19/health/policy/19repubs.html?hp

WASHINGTON — Given hardening Republican opposition to Congressional health care proposals, Democrats now say they see little chance of the minority’s cooperation in approving any overhaul, and are increasingly focused on drawing support for a final plan from within their own ranks.

Top Democrats said Tuesday that their go-it-alone view was being shaped by what they saw as Republicans’ purposely strident tone against health care legislation during this month’s Congressional recess, as well as remarks by leading Republicans that current proposals were flawed beyond repair.

The White House spokesman, Robert Gibbs, said of Republican lawmakers, “Only a handful seem interested in the type of comprehensive reform that so many people believe is necessary to ensure the principles and the goals that the president has laid out.”

9. I don't believe Obama EVER believed that.
But the MSM would happily aid and abet the whining Repubs if they (hypocritically) accused him of not wanting to work with them and taking a 'my way or the highway' attitude, never mind that that's ALL we saw from Bush.

He's now well-documented going above and beyond in an 'attempt' to work with them, to the point of pissing off some on the Left.

I don't know what it is about the President that so many treat him like he fell off the turnip truck, but as long as he uses it to his advantage, then fine.

14. Rahm said it on ...... oh, I think it was day 2 of the Obama admin.....
"The President doesn't have to succeed at bipartisanship, he just has to TRY."

Sadly, there won't just be Democrats voting in the 2012 election. Either party needs the Independants to win. That's what this has always been and WILL ALWAYS BE about.

I dont understand why folks have such a hard time getting it.

And the simple fact that folks here are still whining about it proves that it's working.

13. What a startling piece of news. The repukes won't cooperate. Why are we even giving them
the courtesy of even asking?

16. So that we can say we did
and use that against them in 2010/beyond. It's a great strategy.

21. The repukes are not our main enemy. The corporatists are and the ones in the Democratic
Party are a much bigger threat than what's left of the wacko party.

22. Agreed,
but what I'm saying is that the more we expose the Republicans, the better it is for the party. Hopefully at the same time new Democrats will run against the corporatist ones in the Senate/House on a platform of accusing them of caring more about their bank accounts than the people they represent.

they're not going to vote for anything that truly reforms.

23. I think the Dems put the month of August to good use. The republicans look like thugs.
Well they ARE thugs, bringing guns to health care town halls. That's a win for us. The Dems can say they did everything they were supposed to do. They actually went out in the face of GUNS to talk to their constituents and listen to them.

The republicans brought GUNS. What a grand picture everyone has in their heads now of the republican party. Add to that the "Heil Hitler" thing yesterday and have certainly roped the dope.

20. The Republicans are fools to have passed up the opportunity for historic
reform in an essential life area.

Of course the Republicans are fools, period.
