******* Breaking: White House walks back "Dems going it alone" *******
according to The Hill, White House is insisting on Bipartisan health care bill....

White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said the administration remains committed to drawing Republican support for the bill, particularly in the Senate.

We'll know by their actions. I never thought for a second that they would drop at least the facade of bipartisanship.

"Democrats seem set to go alone on a health bill" starts the story, right side above fold, front page.

2. I remember hearing
Edited on Wed Aug-19-09 10:55 AM by ErinBerin84
last night on one of the news shows that "sources say" that there is one more official bi-partisan meeting, so they can't officially say they are going it alone yet (why the hell not, I don't know), but they really are going it alone. I don't know what to believe anymore, but if we do finally just go with all Dems, it hasn't been soon enough.

They were just too stupid to realize it.

25. I agree.
But did I really expect the news to be confirmed through a Gibbs press briefing? No. But I really don't know what is going to happen. I'm not in denial, because I really feel like it could go either way at this point.

I'm highly skeptical but haven't given up hope for a surprise. I won't be satisfied with a bill that is reform in name only.

28. That's the goal in my opinion. They will continue to put up the bi-partisan
facade until congress is back in sesssion. I think that Snowe and Collins will go along anyway. They are rational.

I think he hard right in and them will smack them down at a later point. Obama is far from stupid when it comes to playing the political game. As many have said here he beat the Clinton machine and he, against the odds and crazy right wing, became the first African American President. I never underestimate him.

9. Its a wait and see game now, it all depends on their actions during the critical votes
Leaking that you might go nuclear and then saying you want bipartisanship the next day may seem confusing unless you realize the WH is talking to two different audiences. The Rethugs already jumped the gun and are whining about the Dems killing bipartisanship.

36. Yep. The Pubs are nothing if not predictable;
they leap on any chance to accuse the Administration of doing wrong.

People who keep screaming about the WH trying for bipartisanship don't get it, IMO; they KNOW the Repubs will stoop to any accusation that the WH isn't playing fair; the WH has put up a pile of proof that they have done more than that, to the point of pissing off some on the Left.

Why? So they can prove that "we tried and tried" when they DO put a bill through with pretty much zero Repub support.

34. Republicans destroyed this country
They ran up the deficit that the Dems are now blamed for.
They destroyed the American Dream by killing the labor movement and "redistributing" assets to the wealthiest.
They hijacked any sense of patriotism to support their own warped sense of reality.
They strive to revert America back to the puritanical days, even while the much of the rest of the world has passed us by.
They are the enemy of fairplay, of justice, of equality, of truth.
They are dinosaurs and they are becoming extinct - that's not being hopeful, that's being realistic.
Why do we seek consensus with fools?

37. BREAKING-They WILL "go it alone" if they have to but the WH isn't going to ADMIT it right now!
It wasn't the WH that said they'll use reconciliation if necessary. It was Dems. on the Hill and the reporting on that hasn't changed from last night. The WH is "walking it back" just because they don't want to look like they've given up on bi-partisanship.

through reconciliation and he said he doesn't know and that he's focused on the "here and now-not the 'what if.'" It should be obvious to everyone that they ARE. How could they "walk back" something they never said? It's "Dems. on the Hill" that told reporters about this.
