To make the culprits have stinging fingers? It won't cause permanent damage, but might cause some temporary discomfort.

Using dried red cayenne pepper flakes, make a "tea" (quart of boiling water over 1/4 c. flakes) then strain through a coffee filter and spray. Let dry.

Handle your own sign with gloves that you can wash, or throw-away gloves.

2. Might turn into a real experience for the vandals ...
if they ... oh, say rubbed their eyes ... picked their noses ... chewed their fingernails ... 'whipped it out' to take a leak.

I remember distinctly a few years ago when I roasted some green peppers and forgot to rinse my hands, and reached up to rub my eyes. My whole life passed before my eyes.

They also make a cayenne pepper spray for keeping vermin off your plants that's oil based. Now, that would be hard to get off, wouldn't it? Not sure what the concentration of pepper in it is, though.

3. If it works for vermin on plants
it will assuredly work for vermin on signs.

15. Yep, I know -- I've used it.
It's one of the 'low-impact' critter discouragement tactics; environmentally safe, not especially damaging to the critter, but definitely leaves a memory strong enough to encourage aversion.

I wouldn't recommend anything that could permanently damage somebody. As little as I like vandalism and the idea that their speech is freer than somebody else's, there's a certain amount of liability you assume by providing what most cops probably would consider an 'attractive nuisance' -- regardless of your political affiliation.

Gonna get our sign tomorrow morning, and I'm not all that worried anyway -- we have two motion-sensitive lights on the front of our house. Just having the light come on would probably be enough to discourage the high school kids around here who are the ones I'd suspect of stealing or vandalizing campaign signs.

4. Yes, the oil would be hard to get off your fingers.
I would only recommend this because so many signs have been stolen.

It's nasty stuff but people really ought NOT to be stealing.

5. I know a guy who was cutting up habaneros for chili
and then went to the bathroom without thinking to wash his hands.

He thought he was going to have to go to the hospital. As it was, he sat in the tub for 3 hours trying to put out the fire.

Poor Mr. Happy wasn't so happy that day.

7. Update: Here's the stuff you can buy.
Click here: http://amos.shop.com/amos/cc/pcd/7066105/prd/10135890/ccsyn/260

This stuff will last up to three months.

Probably most lawn & garden centers have it or something like it.

9. I have to admit...
I'm not in favor of covering signs with a substance which could cause actual physical harm to someone.

However... a generous slathering of Vaseline thoroughly imbued with deer scent (or like scents available from any sporting goods store) would teach them a lesson or two! No dates for little Jimmy! ')

Not a huge deal.

17. But it could be...
... if someone were to get those burning substances in the eyes. I don't think inflicting pain is very admirable. Sorry, but that's the way I feel about it.

12. My sign....

.....sits in the middle of my front lawn. We have no street lights here, I live in a small town.

As the town is republican, I know my sign will be stolen....so I have decided to leave a party prize for the ever so lucky thief.

I have made sure that the sign is surrounded by dog poop....fanning out from the sign for about 15 ft. The bozo who steals my sign will take some dog poop home with him/her. I hope they enjoy their prize!

Did I mention I have a boxer....big poop!

Cheers,
Kim :toast:

16. Bitter end
You can get sprays at pet stores that you use to keep animals from chewing on things. There are both bitter and hot ones. The bitter ones are horrible, and get into the skin on your lips if you handle something sprayed with them, then rub near your mouth.
