Alaska Safe & Secure?
Am I the only Alaska DUer that believes the Lower 48 might get dangerous in the near future?

I'm thinking of Arizona right now, but I can easily imagine a trigger event that would set cities on fire down there.

Am I wrong in believing Alaska is a safer place to be?

This is a serious question.

1. I'm grateful all the time to be up here.
It's why I've stayed for 35 years. I don't know what's going to happen down there, but I would rather watch it from afar. :)

2. That's my gut feeling
I've been here for 26 years. Tried to leave twice, neither attempt lasted more than ten months.

I believe Alaska is a special case. Look at the Olympics--most Americans wave American flags; Alaska Americans wave Alaska flags.

My one concern is that our oil, in the absence of stable supplies from elsewhere, will become more valuable.

3. Survive?
What may keep us safe is not our physical distance from the rest of the nation, but rather our understanding of our connectedness to each other. Are we, in Alaska going to balkanize into small religious/political/ideological/economic groups like the rest of the nation or are we going to be able to come together as a people? Are we going to be able to ensure our safety through our actions that say we are one people or are we going to ensure our collective demise through our actions that say we are all different? If we continue to allow our politicians, our educators (the media), our places of worship and our work place to pedal fear and distrust, we will suffer the same fate as our families in the lower 48.
