Anyone from Sacramento here?
My wife and I are considering moving away from Columbia SC, where we currentluy live, for personal reasons. One of the options we are considering is Sacramento, but I have a couple of questions.

1) Is public transportation any good? I can't drive, due to a disability. My wife drives, so I'm not totally dependent on mass transit, but good public transportation is a necessity if I'm to get around independently.

2) My wife is a music teacher (certified K-12 but prefers teaching elementary school). Will she find it easy to get a job there?

Grateful for any assistance anyone can give me.

1. Sacramento is great for public transit.
Amtrak goes through also. Sac is great for walking as well---sidewalks with a median between it and the street. Other states take this for granted I know. I am a teacher but do not know what the market is for us.

2. California has special credential requirements for teachers
You wife should look at what she needs ...

I can only speak for our school district (different than
Sac's ) ours have immediate openings .

5. Hopefully, my wife will be National Board Certified by the time we move

It should be pretty easy (if expensive) for her to get a credential. I get the impression from that site that there are no single-subject elementary teachers in California, though. Is that correct?

4. I do a lot of business in Sac
if you want specifics on affordability and just want to see what you get for your money, ZIPrealty.com is excellent.

I know my way around there pretty good- we have a couple of investment props there, and yes, the light rail system from the outlying burbs to downtown is excellent , also for getting over to the Berkely-Oaklnd SF bay area

and thus, more Californians are created.

11. Capitol Corridor
It's run by Amtrack, but just a smaller train. Capitol corridor has added a Reno extension to its schedule, so I guess it serves the skiers and well as the commuters.

6. It is a great place to live
The summers can get pretty brutal in July and August.

Public transportation is good.

8. How do you feel about HOT summers? At least it's not humid...
It can get up to and sometimes over 110 degrees in the summer. And no year round
rainfall...

Other than that, it should be fine. Its location is great-- close to the mountains
and close to SF...

9. I'm used to it
Columbia is sweltering in summer. And as you say, it's probably a lot less humid than Columbia. Here comes the cliche...it's a dry heat!

12. Transit is okay if you're near a major bus line or light rail.
Out in the burbs it's not so hot. The website for out transit system is sacrt.com and all the maps and schedules are there.

The summers are nasty, but definitely not as bad as in Columbia.

14. Sacramento--other points
A pretty little city with lots of trees (which are great to rest under during a hot 100 degree day!)
Sacramento has really evolved culturally, if music and theater and movie houses catering to old, foreign, or independent movies are your style. Sports are big here too. Sacramento County usually votes Democrat, but the surrounding counties, particularly toward the foothill counties, tend to vote Republican.
