Published 9:18 am PST Wednesday, March 5, 2008

Kevin Johnson will announce Wednesday evening that he will challenge incumbent Heather Fargo in the Sacramento mayor's race, Johnson's campaign officials confirmed.

Johnson, a Sacramento landowner and developer who was an all-star basketball player at the University of California and with the Phoenix Suns in the NBA, founded St. HOPE, the nonprofit organization that runs Sacramento Charter High School. He has until 5 p.m. Friday to submit nomination papers to the City Clerk's Office.

Johnson will make his official announcement at 5 p.m. at the Guild Theater in Oak Park, campaign sources said.

Fargo is seeking her third term as mayor in the June 3 election.

1. He played for Sac HS against the team my son played for in the
Sac Joaquin section playoffs in either his junior or senior year.

Although he was better known aas a baseball player in those days he was awesome in the game I watched.

I was not at all surprised after seeing him at Cal that he gave up baseball.

Don't know whether that all qualifies him to be mayor though.

2. Sacramento Bee has been pounding him with the slumlord tag for months...
but when all is said and done, it appears Johnson's shortcomings are dwarfed by his accomplishments. He is ready, and very serious about the job.

4. Oh, you bet
Fargo knows the ropes, and Johnson has the stamina. It's going to be real interesting, as is the republican primary race in the fourth district - McClintock vs Ose (wasn't Ose your rep a few years back?). Funny, when McClintock announced his candidacy, he immediately distanced himself from Bush.

5. yup Ose was mine but he said he would only serve X number of terms and he actually
held true to his word, course he never said anything about serving more terms in another district. The Bee had an article on McClintock the other day or maybe it was last week and some of the voters in District 4 were actually pretty pissed about him carpet bagging and didn't want him in the race. thats gonna be a fun one to watch.

6. Ose should have been my representative, like Vic Fazio before him
Funny, I was ready to vote against him the first time he ran only to realized I got Gerrymandered out of that district. Does McClintock have a large carpet bag war chest? I ask because Ose is already flooding the air with ads - maybe just a tactic to distract the republicans from McClintock's announcement. They are gonna duke it out. Fun!

8. I'm looking forward to seeing what he has to say.
The area definitely needs more infill and redevelopment of blighted areas, which seems to be his thing. Fargo's push to develop even more out in Natomas before the flood risk moratorium kicks in is the stupidest idea I've heard in a very long time, just epically, dangerously stupid.

Then again, I'm in the unincorporated county, so I don't get to vote on the mayoral race either way.
