Dachshund mauled by pit bull mix undergoes surgery

TAMARAC - An 11-pound dachshund is recovering from three hours of surgery to close a gaping wound after a pit bull mix tore the small dog from its owner's arms and ripped open its belly, the injured dog's owner said today.

The 5:30 p.m. Tuesday attack in the 6800 block of Northwest 84 Street occurred when Jane Van Lengen was walking her red, 7-year-old dachshund, Lizzie, three houses from her own home, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office.

"It was bad," Brian Monk, the emergency veterinarian who treated the dog, said today. "She was very lucky. The only one I'd seen worse than this came in dead."

The owner of the Pit Bull is a negligent owner. A similar incident has already happened once. The man needs to have his dogs taken away from him, and he needs to be ordered to not have anymore pets.

Good on the little fellow, but this kind of thing happens all the time. Ask any emergency veterinarian.. And usually by those breeds that are less likely to be on the public's "demonization" list.
