Is it illegal to make a copy of a driver license in Florida? Seems to me

several years ago when they used your social security number, this was brought up some where. It was referring to apartment complexes and car dealers and others who want to copy your driver license. I know I read it somewhere. Can't find right now.

I have always told people who wanted it - it was illegal and they accepted another picture id - now I have been assigned a credit union for a car loan and they want to keep a copy scanned on file on their computers. I said no. Now I am looking for the information on it being illegal . Any help would be appreciated

1. Back when I was in the mortgage business, we always got copies of

borrower's licenses as proof of who we were lending to. I don't think it's illegal to make a photocopy, or for a notary to certify a DL copy, but I can't find anything in the DMV website to prove that one way or the other. With all the identity theft around, I'd be concerned about who I give a copy to.

2. No, it is not illegal.

In fact, the state law says you may copy a driver's license for employment identification as long as you do the same for all new hires. Also, in my position as a notary, the law also states we may notarize a copy of a driver's license for the purpose of verifying that it is a true copy.

It is your choice to refuse, but it is definitely not illegal.
