OT DSL in Mcchenry Illinois - urgg please help
Hey everyone I am a complete dunce when it comes to sattelite and cable internet providers so I need your help. I am trying to find a relatively cheap ($40 or less) internet dsl conection for my dell, however yahoo and verizon say that don't service my area.
If anyone has any suggestions or information to point me in that area please let me know. I hate being connected at 26600 bps. Thank you all for help.
Danny.
PS could part of the problem be that I have a barrington address and live in Mchenry county?.

2. Thanks global and yes
I tried sbc thru yahoo and was turned down,
Comcast cast only carries sattilite a bit too expensive on fixed income. Maybe I am beig a bit too picky?

3. DSL is either available or not, depending entirely on your local company.
The question is whether your local phone company has a dsl endpoint close enough to you to even make the service physically possible for any vendor. Checking with other companies doesn't help if the local telco doesn't have dsl capabilities to your house.

If your local phone company hasn't put in the necessary infrastructure yet, your only alternatives would be cable, line-of-sight wireless, or satellite. Satellite is still a little pricey, and line-of-sight wireless is only available in a handful of areas (mostly inner city, or some rural areas without dsl or cable).

5. Check SBC again
Have you checked online at sbc.yahoo.com whether or not your phone number is eligible? Maybe they've upgraded or opened new facilities since you last asked.

6. Where in McHenry county?
I'm in northern McHenry, Johnsburg to be exact....DSL is not available in many areas of McHenry county. I spoke with an SBC employee about a month ago and he said that he didn't see DSL in my area for at least 5 more years.

However, there is DLS available in the area. They are based out of Lake in the Hills.

Hope this helps you...

Cheers!

7. Dan, if you have cable

(which I can't imagine being without anymore), and it's Comcast, you can get highspeed. We had the same problem with SBC and Yahoo. We were all signed up, pre-paid and ready to roll. Then the called us and said we weren't close enough to a 'station' (or some sort of equipment) and there were no plans for one in the near future.

Our cable bill includes the highspeed with 3 computers hooked up and we have premium channels (not just basic) and it runs about $150 per month in total.

eta: we're in DuPage county at the southern border where four counties merge.

I signed on with SBC ( :puke: )as they have the monopoly here in the QC area. For less than $100 per month, I have my DSL AND unlimited long distance coverage (in the US). Another option might be Att Worldnet. You can find more about them at att.net.

Good luck.
