Fresh from his commanding victory in the Republican primary, Mitch Daniels has taken the lead from Democratic Gov. Joe Kernan in the race for governor, according to a new Indianapolis Star-WTHR (Channel 13) poll.

Among the 540 Hoosiers surveyed who said they are likely to vote on Nov. 2, Daniels has a 46 percent to 40 percent lead over Kernan; roughly 10 percent of the likely voters are undecided, and the rest support candidates of other parties.<snip>

Despite the head-to-head results, the poll uncovered good news for Kernan. Fifty-five percent of those polled approved of the job Kernan has done as governor since taking over the office on Sept. 13 after the death of Gov. Frank O'Bannon. That question was asked of the full poll sample and has the lower margin of error.<snip>

"It's been Mitch TV for at least four to five months," said former Indiana Democratic Party Chairman Robin Winston.

1. the governors office has been in Democratic hands
for so long in such a republican leaning state that I wouldn't be surprised if people will vote for a change. Still, I hope Kernan can hold on.

2. This will be a race to the middle
Let's face it, we're basically talking about two people who are basically going to agree 80% of the time. The trick is going to be to woo the undecided moderates to one side or the other, which means we're going to see an extremely boring campaign.
