1. Wow. Iowa is now right up there with Mississippi and Georgia!

"Kick A Raped Woman While She's Down" -- Apparently this new game is even more fun than "Plants and Zombies!"

===============================================================
"The Iowa State House is weighing both a Personhood bill, which gives legal rights to zygotes by classifying them as separate "persons," and a bill that expands the right to use deadly force to protect a third party. The Personhood legislation attempts to criminalize abortion and common forms of birth control and has already been approved by a State House subcommittee;, . . ."
================================================================
(from the rights watch article you linked)

Obviously the Iowa House Republicans (who were swept into office by the well-financed campaign against "liberal" Iowa Supreme Court justices who refused to legalize homophobia) are showing their obeisance to those who provide the largess in their campaign coffers.

There is no chance that this bill would make it past the Senate, still Dem-controlled.

2. There is also a VERY interesting clause in there:
"The Iowa Supreme Court shall not have appellate jurisdiction over the provisions of this section."

Methinks these jesters need to be taking a civics course before they get to be legislators.

There is an article about this very thing in today's Des Moines Register: "Bill aims to bar gay marriage, review by court"
<snip>
"Review of laws by the Iowa Supreme Court is one of the fundamental pieces of the state's system of checks and balances, and such a provision faces intense legal hurdles.

A spokesman for Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller said the bill is unquestionably unconstitutional."

6. If I could add an amendment to the Iowa Constitution
I would mandate the passing of a high school level civics course by anyone wishing to be a member of the Iowa General Assembly or elected Governor of the state.

Are our fellow citizens aware of what's going on with Branstad and the Republicans or are they all oblivious?
