Brockton power plant may be restricted from buying crucial water
By Kyle Alspach, Enterprise staff writer

BROCKTON— In what opponents hope is a blow to plans for a fossil fuel-burning power plant, the City Council unanimously passed a measure Tuesday allowing the council to control the sale of city wastewater.

Access to 2 million gallons of treated wastewater per day for cooling at the power plant is a key part of the proposal.

But under the new council measure, buyers must now get a two-thirds vote of approval from the council to purchase wastewater from Brockton.

Most councilors oppose the plant and say they wouldn't approve the sale of wastewater to its developer, Brockton Clean Energy.

Some councilors are now vowing to try to further limit the company's water source options, by seeking to oversee the sale of desalinated water, a costlier alternative source being considered for the plant.
