Democrat Marzilli wins state Senate seat
Fears of low voter turnout were realized yesterday in the special election for the open state Senate seat in the Fourth Middlesex District, as candidates spent the day encouraging residents to head to the polls.

"Our phone banks have been packed today," said Matt Talancy, spokesman for Republican candidate Brion Cangiamila of Billerica.

Spirits had been high in Cangiamila's camp as candidates and supporters awaited results last night, but the low turnout did not favor the Republican candidate in this Democratic state, as Talancy thought it might.

Cangiamila fell to the Democratic candidate, Representative J. James Marzilli Jr. of Arlington, who also bested Constitution Party candidate Thomas E. Fallon of Burlington.

Winning 59.4 percent of the vote, Marzilli was officially declared the winner about 9:30 p.m. Cangiamila came in with 36.1 percent and Fallon had 4.5 percent, officials said.
