The Pursuit of Justice: Perspectives on major civil liberties issues from two sides of the bench
Featuring: The Honorable Nancy Gertner and National ACLU Legal Director Steve Shapiro, moderated by Phyllis Segal
Thursday, July 28 at 7pm
Chilmark Community Center, 520 South Road
Join the ACLU of Massachusetts for its second annual "Roger Baldwin Summer Series" program at the Chilmark Community Center, which sits on land donated to the town by Roger Baldwin, the founder of the American Civil Liberties Union. This year's program features two panelists known in Massachusetts and across the country for their work defending individual rights and liberties.
Judge Nancy Gertner was an influential and prominent criminal defense attorney and civil rights activist before being appointed by President Clinton to the federal bench, where she served from 1994 until earlier this year. This fall, she will become a Professor at Harvard Law School.
Steve Shapiro has been Legal Director for the national ACLU, a nonpartisan and nonprofit organization that advocates for civil rights and civil liberties and appears before the Supreme Court more than any entity other than the U.S. Department of Justice, for almost 20 years.
Together, they will share their perspectives on civil liberties from two sides of the bench (Judge Gertner's most recent perspective being behind the bench, and Steve Shapiro's in front of it), and discuss recent cases and their thoughts on the future of issues like democracy, liberty, justice, and equality.
The conversation will be moderated by Phyllis Segal, a Chilmark resident and the Vice President of Civic Ventures, a national think tank and program incubator. Ms. Segal's current work builds upon a career leading organizations, advocating for social change, teaching, and practicing law. Ms. Segal serves on the Boards of the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation, Heller School for Social Policy and Management, Eli J. Segal Citizen Leadership Program at Brandeis University, and ReServe, Inc. Her nomination by President Obama to the Board of the Corporation for National and Community Service is currently pending before the United States Senate.
