POLL: Should Keating represent Cape Cod and the Islands?

As reported yesterday, Representative William Keating will make Bourne his new home as sweeping changes to congressional districts aim to provide a stronger voice to minority communities and adjust for a slowly growing population.

"After talking with my wife Tevis and our children, Kristen and Patrick, I have decided to run in the new 9th Congressional District where we've owned a home for 17 years," Keating said in a statement.

There has been some talk of his decision to move to Bourne as a way to avoid a race for a contested seat in the Boston Metro.

Do you think he should run for the Cape/South Coast seat? Do you like the new redistricting plans? Do you think they make things more fair?

1. God he's WORSE than Delahunt!

I actually miss Bill Delahunt. He's a Stephen Lynch clone!

5. your post implies Delahunt was subpar somehow. How?

I know it's hard to convey tone in text but the capitalization of WORSE and your use of 'actually' suggests a negative view of Delahunt, even if elevating him above the other 2.

I'm not overly enthusiastic about Keating, I campaigned hard for his opponent Robert O'Leary in the primary, but I don't think Keating's anywhere close to Stephen Lynch.

The new districting will put me in Capuano's (8th) district I think, while I was always in the 10th before as far back as I can remember.

2. Keating doesn't even live in the district anymore . . .

he moved to Quincy for the election and now Quincy has been moved to Lynch's district. He is going to look like a real carpetbagger if he moves again.

Personally, I'd like to see Andrea Silbert win the seat.

but the way to win the new district is to have someone from the Cape run. Without Quincy and Weymouth in the mix, Hyannis and Plymouth would become big players. Note - Jeff Perry beat Keating in Plymouth and Sandwich and lots of other upper Cape towns. There's a lot of tea baggers around the bridge. The Cape itself is more a mix of old school Republicans and progressive Democrats.

I would say the Democrats would have a better chance if their candidate actually came from the Cape.

6. Ahem, Robert O'Leary is from Barnstable and won the cape in the 2010 primary

too bad it wasn't enough to outweigh Keating's machine in Quincy.

You're right - O'Leary would have won if Quincy and Weymouth hadn't been part of District 10. Now they will be in Lynch's district.

I did later find out that Rob had accepted funds from one of the Koch brothers for his campaign. I still like him - he was one of my brothers' professors at Mass. Maritime - but I would definitely scrutinize him more closely before supporting him in another run.
