Any Yoopers here? I need some travel ideas.

Need some input-the Mrs. and I are thinking of taking a week in June or July. We lived in Marquette back in '95 and did some camping, usually Witch Lake.

She doesn't particularly like to do the tent thing anymore (arthritis, back problems) so I was curious about reasonably-priced cabins, etc.

One thing I had in mind was entering the UP at Hurley/Ironwood and taking 2/64 along LS through Silver City, Ontonagon, Hancock, Copper Harbor, etc.

But I also wouldn't mind being close to or staying in the Hiawatha Nat'l Forest.

Also, I would like to know where the FIBS and NE Cheeseheads DON'T GO. We are willing to travel all the way across Wisconsin to get there.

2. When I go to the U.P....

I sometimes like to stay in the rustic cabins that they have at some of the state parks. They have no electricity, they're heated by wood stoves (you chop the wood), and the beds are like rocks, but they're still a couple of steps above tents. They cost about $60 per night. One of my favorites is the section 17 cabin in the Porcupine Mountains. The hike is only about 1.5 miles.
If you're going to be up in the NW UP, then Bond Falls is a MUST. It's the best waterfall in the U.P. and it's handicap accessible.
If you go to Copper Harbor, don't miss the Estivant Pines hike.
Personally, I like the wilderness areas like Sylvania and the McCormick tract. I would recommend a book titled 199 Michigan waterfalls to anybody looking for natural beauty in the U.P. I think 198 of the falls are in the U.P., and most of them are west of Marquette and north of Iron Mountain. I also love the Grand Sable sand dunes east of Grand Marais. Don't hike down though, because the hike back up is BRUTAL.
I've never spotted one, but I still like to go on the Moose tours in Marquette Co. The Peshekee river grade road is beautiful.

4. Oh come on, if healthy, that climb back up the dune is an adventure....

Seriously, on a sunny day the view of Lake Superior is awesome from atop the dunes. The beach below is rather peaceful. And after climbing back up, you know you've got a good heart, because it's beating like mad, and you may be panting like a dog.... It's a great way to humble your kids---or grandkids....

But the part of the dunes I went to was west of Grand Marais on the eastern end of Pictured Rocks...

9. Adventure? It's like a freakin' olympic competition!

3. Think my favorite UP sites are

Porcupine Mtn State park and the Keweenaw Peninsula. Driving or biking the Brockway Mtn Drive is like heaven. Lots of history abounds in Copper Country too. Get permission. You can hike up Michigan's highest peak at Mt Curwood in Marquette County . Real wilderness. Have time. Don't forget Isle Royale National Park out in the middle of Lake Superior.

5. If you go to Grand Marais, don't miss the Pickle Barrel museum

It's better than it sounds! It was the former summer house of an artist who did cartoons in the 1930s of some characters called The Teeny Weenies. They were small and created their houses out of things like pickle barrels. The residents of Grand Marais apparently clubbed together one year and built the artist a house that was a giant pickle barrel. I think it's kind of a dubious compliment, and not a place I'd want to live, but the fact that it's still there and that the Teeny Weenies weren't forgotten is kind of interesting.

There are some nice and cheap hotels in Munising if you have a wife like mine cabins will not be good enough, LMFAO.

They have nice little housekeeping cabins. Nothing fancy but very comfortable. My husband and I stay there every time we head up.

Enjoy your trip! It should be lovely this time of year. I'm a troll (as in a lower peninsula resident for those outside Michigan) but have spent a lot of time up there over the years. I love it. :-)

The Falls plus Whitefish Bay not to far away with amazing Shipwreck Museum and fantastic Fruits of the Forest PIE in the Tequahmenon restaurant and great blueberries in season - right about now.
