Then let's take a minute to write and thank her for doing it.

1. Done.
I just emailed her a "Thank you" for her vote against retroactive immunity for phone companies, in response to your post.

2. Here's mine...
Dear Senator Klobochar,

It has come to my attention that you voted against retroactive immunity for the telecommunication corporations.

I wanted to thank you for doing so. The telecoms have eagery jumped through Bush's hoops for whatever deep dark mass-control scheme authoritarians like Republicans drool over, and they should be made to pay.

Unfortunately, I'm sure that the telecoms have been rewared for their compliance with new laws regulations, mergers, and empires that will earn then billions a year for quite a while. It would be nice if you could break up these media monopolies so that "infotainment" could go the way of the dodo.

I also see that your fellow senator Norm Coleman voted differently. While it is good that Al Franken will beat him in November and throw him out of office, I doubt that Republicans such as Coleman see that as much more than a new job opportunity. Most likely he'll pick up a 7-figure salary as a "consultant" for the businesses he used to regulate.

It would be nice if you can do something about that as well.

And remember, as a general rule, if Bush wants it, it's at minimum a bad idea and most likely a really bad idea.

:-)

3. I love your last line
we should all add it to every communication we have with our Senators and Representative - especially the Republican ones.

though I did mention her earlier FISA vote - just in passing though. I wanted to be sure she got the message that we have been and will continue to pay attention.

Oh, and I sent a nasty one to Normie as well.

8. Klobuchar Response
Hello,

I'm a lurker but thought Mister Ed had a good point that we should thank Amy Klobuchar for her vote.
Plus krispos42 made me laugh with the great ending: "And remember, as a general rule, if Bush wants it, it's at minimum a bad idea and most likely a really bad idea."

You probably all received the same response (after the "thanks for writing!" email), but for the record, here's the follow up email:

<<Thank you for contacting me concerning the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. I appreciate hearing from you.

I believe that long-term FISA legislation must strike the right balance between protecting our safety and protecting our civil rights. Both the Intelligence and Judiciary Committees of the Senate passed bills that proposed to elevate the role of the FISA court and provide more oversight of the government’s surveillance activities. While both bills represented improvements over the temporary law, I believe the Judiciary bill struck a more appropriate balance between security and privacy considerations, and I voted to move that version of FISA reform forward.

After a majority of the Senate rejected the Judiciary Committee’s bill, I voted for several amendments to incorporate key elements of the Judiciary bill into the Intelligence Committee’s bill, including an amendment to remove the provision granting blanket retroactive immunity to telecommunications companies. Unfortunately, each amendment was defeated. Since blanket retroactive immunity was included in the final version of the bill, I could not support the legislation passed by the Senate on February 12, 2008.

Thank you again for your input, and please don’t hesitate to contact me again regarding this or any other issue.

Sincerely,

Amy Klobuchar
United States Senator
