Are kids knocking on your door, peddling the Star Tribune newspaper?

Happened to me tonight. I had to say "No".

Not just because of the "no solicitors" rule in the apt complex, and they seemed like cool kids (8th and 9th grade) but the Star Tribune is doing a campaign by having kids try to sell people Strib newspapers and in return they get a scholarship.

I think it's sad kids have to peddle newspapers, instead of doing homework, to get such a small scholarship, but even explaining why I had to say no, they didn't seem to understand why.

My secondary one being, years ago, I had a tussle with the Strib over unwanted telemarketer adds and trying to cancel their service (no billing issues).

I wished them luck...

Later, I heard some guy talking to them about not soliciting. :( There's got to be a better way for kids to get scholarships than this gross irony of peddling to get a scholarship for a job that'll go offshore anyway.

1. I wish I mentioned the following when I first made the post:

The glossy hand-out they had me read said "NO DONATIONS ACCEPTED".

They were pawns for the newspaper; the rules effectively saying they were not allowed personal donations.

The Star Tribune isn't worth the effort it takes to throw it in the recycling.

4. I kept getting phone calls asking me about subscribing. Since I subscribe for the entire week,

I asked the woman, "What's left?" "If you don't stop calling me, I will CANCEL!" Can't these idiots coordinate their phone list with their subscriber list? Jeez.

6. I canceled right after the takeover.

Dumping the local writers, and as you mentioned, going with the offshore ad service, was way too much for me to accept. When I called to cancel, I made it very clear those were the reasons. Evidently the new ownership doesn't care and now would rather desperately try to tug on those heartstrings to get people subscribing again.

7. What's Sad

The Strib is a rag, no doubt. But why is it said that kids are peddling the paper. Kids wanting to work, especially for a scholarship or education can only be a good thing.
