1400+ fraudulent voter registration cards found in St. Louis
--All the cards came from the same source, a group called ACORN. It does voter registration door to door. A spokesperson says they take measures to make sure all their signatures are legitimate.--

Anybody know who this ACORN is? They registered 45,000 people supposedly. Some dead, some underage.

1. they're a non-partisan group
and the problems referred to in that story are much smaller and less sinister than that lousy hit piece would lead you to believe.

2. ahh
I wasnt familiar with them, just thought it was strange that they had cards filled out by dead people and people who were teenagers and never filled them out.

4. registering folks in poor neighborhoods
is frowned on by republicans and for all their accusations, almost nothing ever comes of their accusations.

Typically they find a few with mistakes and then say that every single reg. turned in by that person is "fraudulent".

Note in the story that past claims led to zero prosecutions. This is strictly a voter supression ploy by the repubs.

Brian Mellor, the group's election counsel, said that it welcomed any prosecutions of workers who turn in fraudulent cards. "We try very hard to monitor the employees, but there are chances of things slipping through," he said.

Mellor said his group pays the workers $8 an hour to register voters and not by the number of registrations they collect.

But Mellor added that he was angry that Leiendecker had said nothing about the questionable cards during a meeting Tuesday afternoon. Leiendecker replied the cards weren't the purpose of the meeting, which he said focused on missing information on some of the voter registrations.

3. I wouldnt attribut the problem to ACORN
as they only hire people to go door-to-door or public places and get people to fill out voter registrations. They are only as accurate as the people who fill out the cards.

MOST of the problem registrations are from incomplete address information, which could be as simple as people forgetting their zip code or writing their street name illegibly. 3 dead people out of 45,000 registrations? I chalk that up to a couple nuts who decided to register a dead friend when they ran into ACORN at the mall.

5. and a lot of poor folks don't know that incomplete
or inaccurate info will disqualify them. So they'll guess what the zip code is instead of finding out for sure. Plus, at only $8/hour the help ACORN gets isn't exactly of the highest caliber.
