Daily Record: Corzine battling shadow of fortune
The Wall Street veteran fights for social causes, not always with success

WASHINGTON -- Nearly five years since he came to Washington, New Jersey Sen. Jon Corzine still is a man defined largely by his wealth.

Whether it's the money he has given to political organizations in his home state or his opposition to President Bush's tax cuts because he says they disproportionately benefit multimillionaires like himself, Corzine struggles to escape the shadow of the very fortune that propelled him to Capitol Hill.

He has gotten into hot water this year over unfulfilled promises to create a blind trust and for a nearly half-million-dollar gift he made to former girlfriend Carla Katz, a powerful state union chief.

And on Thursday, a published report stated that Corzine, as a member of the Foreign Relations Committee, voted last year for a tax treaty with Japan that netted him a significant tax break.
