Gov declares state of emergency due to gas shortage, cold

"Gov. Susana Martinez declared a state of emergency Thursday afternoon due to record-breaking cold and shortages in natural gas throughout the state. Towns and cities throughout the state have been without natural gas including Taos, Questa and portions of Santa Fe.

Martinez also announced that the heat would be turned down in all state buildings and sent all non-essential employees home to save natural gas and electricity.

The New Mexico Gas Company issued a press release at noon which said, “Due to rolling black outs in West Texas and other problems, the delivery of natural gas into New Mexico has been impeded. States in the southwest are experiencing similar issues.”

Las Cruces suffered rolling electrical blackouts yesterday and El Paso Electric warned that it could happen again today. The company urged residents to conserve to put less strain on the system.

“Do not use appliances such as the washing machine, dishwasher, or electric clothes dryer,” a statement issued by El Paso Electric said. “Turn off extra lights, electric water heater and other electric appliances that you do not absolutely need. Minimize the use of your electric range or oven when preparing meals.”

The company said there were disruptions in the service in Tularosa, La Luz, Espanola, Taos, Questa, Red River, the town of Bernalillo, Placitas, Santa Clara Pueblo, Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo, Alamogordo, Silver City, and San Ildefonso Pueblo."

State employees were sent home @ 2PM to reduce heating costs, Kirkland Air Force base sent non essential workers home @ 2 PM to conserve energy. APS public schools will cancel school for the 3rd day in a row, most likely due to cold temps @ bus stops, and energy conservation.
Keep in mind this is only after two days of near record weather - not a week or a month. NM is one of the largest natural gas and oil producing states, yet we can't provide enough power and gas to heat all homes in the state. Global climate shift is real.

1. Our gas leaves the state

I love how they say "disruptions" as if it were just a temporary inconvenience. They shut down gas to the northern mountain areas this morning when the temperatures were still in the minus double digits. There is no timeline for returning service to this area. Space heaters sold out as soon as stores opened this morning and that's going to put a hell of a load on the electrical grid.

The gas issues originated in Texas when they shut down compressor stations on gas lines entering NM during their rolling blackouts. We were left without enough gas for the entire state so they cut off entire swaths of the state to preserve service to high population density areas.

2. I'm still having a lot of trouble

understanding how this can be occurring.

Why am I being reminded of the rolling blackouts in California several years back, the intention of which was to be able to force higher prices?

3. This has the stink of being ENRON'ed all over it.

It's been this cold in Santa Fe before. Rare occasions but still not this level of COLLAPSE.

Something is up. Susana Tejana is going to use this to decree her Texas buddies to some spoils here.

4. The Super Bowl needs heat.

That is my guess. Dallas has record cold temps and more than 200,000 people flying in for the Super Bowl. For Super Bowl XXX the city of Phoenix bought bus tickets for as many homeless as they could find and shipped them to Tucson and San Diego. Saddens me how little national coverage this is getting.

5. Stay warm, friends.

We have invited friends from Taos to stay with us and they are considering it but worried that they wouldn't be there if/when the gas company came to relight their pilot.

We are going to see more "disruptions" as the thaw continues and frozen/burst water lines start melting and flooding, too.

There are disadvantages to living in a state with no infrastructure.

And somehow or other you can bet yer last nickel that our esteemed Goob's Texass buddies are gonna make money off this.

6. Still no gas

They started relighting Red River about an hour ago. Taos has been pushed back to Sunday/Monday. They are requiring residents to be at their homes and businesses so that technicians can relight their stoves, water heaters and furnaces. A lot of people aren't going to get their gas restored because they can't stay home all day waiting.
