UPDATE: Duke Energy Coal-fired Power Plant
From the NC Conservation Network. I can't BELIEVE these PIGS
are building a coal-fired power plant in this day and age - with
climate change being such a problem. :wtf:

_ _ _ _ _

We have an update for you on Duke Energy's request
to create one of the nation's largest coal burning plants
by expanding their Cliffside plant (60 miles west of Charlotte.)
Over the past two years you've sent hundreds and hundreds
of emails and letters to legislators, the Governor, candidates,
and state regulators urging the state to stop the creation of
this polluting plant. As you may recall, last year - as a
result of citizen action and the work of organizations opposing
the original proposal for two coal plants - the state
Utilities Commission gave permission to
move forward with the construction of only one of
these. Since then Duke Energy has been moving forward with
plans to build this coal-fired power plant by pursuing
a permit through the N. C. Division of Air Quality.

On Tuesday - despite public outcry against
this plant and the fact that we are in the midst of a global
climate change crisis, the N.C. Division of Air Quality issued the last
permit for Duke Energy to build a coal-fired power plant in
Cliffside, NC. This is unacceptable because coal emissions
are one of the leading causes of air pollution, global warming,
and unsafe levels of mercury in our fish.

The environmental community is exploring other
ways to stop this plant. Please stay tuned: as this story
continues to unfold we will continue to keep you up-to-date on
ways you can help. For now, if you would like to
take action, write a letter-to-the-editor of your
local newspaper letting them know that North Carolinians do not
want more polluting power plants.

writing letters-to-the-editor.
