PD: DeWine’s 9/11 TV ad video image is doctored

Now, this is one nauseating story. Where's the outrage from Wingnuttia?
Aren't the citizens of Wingnuttia furious at their senator for using images of 9/11 for political purposes? Even more so, aren't they furious that their senator felt he could make the 9/11 imagery even scarier by doctoring it?

DeWine’s 9/11 TV ad video image is doctored - Cleveland Plain Dealer

Excerpt:

Washington — Sen. Mike DeWine’s latest re-election commercial uses a video image of smoke rising from the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001, while an announcer says that opponent Sherrod Brown is weak on national security.

The footage is haunting — and, it turns out, is fake.

The campaign of DeWine, a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, acknowledged as much Wednesday night, saying its media consultant used gimmickery to create smoke billowing from the South Tower of the World Trade Center. The commercial shows the North Tower unaffected at that moment — even though it was the first to be struck by a hijacked jetliner.

That would make the “footage” impossible, said U.S. News & World Report, which broke the story in its online edition.

The firm, Stevens, Reed, Curcio, & Potholm, also doctored images in a 1996 campaign for U.S. Sen. John Warner of Virginia -- and got fired by Warner for doing so....
it gave the appearance that Warner's opponent was shaking hands with former Virginia Gov. Douglas Wilder. Wilder is black, and critics said the ad was racist.

Other clients have included George Voinovich, Bob Taft, John McCain, Bill Frist.... Other ads have included the one in 1988 making fun of Michael Dukakis in a tank. If nothing else, the firm's work isn't easily forgotten."

from the Plain Dealer, "Open Politics."

5. Dukakis in the tank!!!
These guys are good at smear ads... I felt strongly that the Dukakis-in-a-tank ad did him in. That, and Willie Horton... were these guys responsible for the revolving door/Willie Horton ad, too?

7. Stevens Reed Web site

Interesting. Their client list reads like a who's who of the GOP, at almost every level. They've also done work for Joe Deters and Pat DeWine. Their opening ad montage features the swifties, and I believe some ads that candidates later pulled.

"The power of persuasion..." yep. That's one way to put it, I guess.
