CLEVELAND (AP) -- The Cleveland Clinic says a neurosurgeon at the renowned hospital used a dog with an induced brain aneurysm to demonstrate a medical device to salespeople.

The Clinic says the dog was anesthetized during the demonstration and euthanized afterward.

The hospital says the use of the dog was unauthorized and the Clinic does not allow procedures with animals for the sole purpose
of sales training...

The hospital says it has reported itself to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which regulates animal testing.

I'm appalled! The doctor needs to be disciplined accordingly--perhaps some "demonstration" on him might be a fair punishment! Let's hope the poor dog is finally at peace...

World Class Care, right? Sad thing is people in this city/region will still hold that place, and those arrogant sons of b1tches in high esteem. Serves you all right, and you should not be shocked.

The fact that they did this at the Clinic doesn't surprise me. Was this one of the devices that they have a vested interest in? How much was this "animal vendor" paid? Also..wasn't the clinic in trouble years ago about doing testing on animals or something along those lines? The Clinic has turned into nothing but a multi-million dollar money machine!

This is outrageous. It wasn't stated in the broadcast what the machinery was designed to do but obviously it wasn't to save a life after the aneurysm was induced...

CLEVELAND -- ...The surgeon, who was not immediately identified, was presenting the device to a group of salespeople Wednesday. The hospital confirmed the incident to The Associated Press in a written statement.

"As an academic medical center, Cleveland Clinic does not allow procedures with animals for the sole purpose of sales training. The situation that occurred yesterday was unauthorized and not in compliance with our policy," the statement said.

The clinic said the surgeon did not have permission from the hospital's Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee to sacrifice the dog...

The newspaper reported that the doctor submitted an application to the committee, but its members never reviewed it...

7. Yes, it's the best for those who have the money for it.

Anyone else, fuggeddaboudit. Believe me, I lived near Cleveland for over thirty years and I'm well aware of the dark side of this supposedly "world class" institution. If you don't have money, or fantastic, comprehensive insurance, they don't even want you darkening their doors. What little charity care they provide is given grudgingly, with them kicking and screaming all the way. Just a few blocks from their "campus" are people who will never, ever see the inside of the Clinic unless they're cleaning it, emptying bedpans or serving the food, even if they have cancer or other serious diseases. In fact, ESPECIALLY if they have cancer or other serious diseases. And they're really obnoxious about it, too.

And don't count on the Board giving a shit, either. As someone else on this thread has pointed out, they've had troubles with this kind of thing previously. Some of their doctors and surgeons have financial investments in medical products and have been caught violating professional ethics regarding such investments. Nothing much ever seems to happen about it, though.

2. I really object to the word "sacrifice"
It sounds as if it was a religious ritual or something.

What a sad story.

5. That is apparently the preferred term in the animal experiment business
I've read several papers where that term is used. It does, indeed, sound like some religious ritual.

6. I've experimented on mice and I've never, ever heard anyone use that term
When we had to kill a mouse, we said we were killing it. We didn't like it, but we at least acknowledged that we were killing something.

I can see why people would use that term-- kinda distances the killer from the animal, doesn't it?
