Reynolds School District (Portland OR) just laid off 105 Special Ed Assistants.
105 of the lowest paid employees in the school system...just booted them.

Hey! Now that the special ed students won't perform well maybe they can fire the teachers for doing a crappy job!

2. MY district may take a 25% cut to special ed next year as well
the legislature is voting...25% this year and 25% more the next year. The money will go to their new pet project of all day kindergarten.

4. oh...i heard that the comment by the administrator was
"I'll get some soccer mom's for half the money" but that is kind of gossip through the grapevine...but sure shows he doesn't have much respect for very qualified people doing a very difficult job.

5. Having taught for 230 years, I have no illusions about administrators. They get raises based
on what they do that is "innovative." Saving money for the District to get a personal raise? No-brainer.

10. It is a big district
and that is pretty much every assistant. They now can't service their special ed classes and the parents will start suing. That is going to save them a lot of money, eh?

11. This is just pure shit
Those with disabilities deserve the same education that non-disabled students get. If the school district is unable to provide that, then sue their asses.

When I was younger I had a minor learning disability (to be clear I am not from this school district, but have lived in Portland) and received help from 5th-12th grade (I needed minimal help by high school). I was one of the lucky ones who was able to go on to college because of the help I received.
