So....explain Sam Adams and what he's done here

Here's what I don't get:

Sam wasn't even RUNNING for re-election. He didn't have to appease the "law and order" fetishists.

Why did he have to let the cops and the bankers win on this?

And will any of you ever vote for the guy again in any future races?

Sam could have left office a hero...now, he's ruined himself, and for no good reason.

1. I also heard that the Occupy Salem encapment was cleared as well.
Anybody Salem-area Du'ers(Salem is where I grew up, that's why I'm interested)know about that?

I think there may be an issue with the police chief. I heard speculation that he wants to run for mayor.
