CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Republican U.S. Rep. Henry Brown will not seek a sixth term in Congress this fall, an official with his campaign said Monday.

Brown, a farm boy who became one of the South Carolina's most powerful state lawmakers before embarking on a second political chapter in Congress, is 74.

A campaign official with knowledge of Brown's plans said he will announce his retirement Monday. The official asked not to be identified to avoid pre-empting the official announcement.

There has been speculation in recent months that Brown might retire after five terms in his reliably Republican coastal district, which stretches from near Charleston to the North Carolina state line.

2. I dunno.
I just figure if other people can pull these predictions of election results out of their asses, then so can I. And it's kind of fun.

3. Perhaps not an impossible climb for Democrats in SC-1...
Democrat Linda Ketner came within 4 points of unseating Brown in 2008. SC-1 however is an R+10 district, and the dynamic will have to somehow change, or Republicans nominate an ineptitude, for Democrats to pick up the seat, especially with Obama not on the ticket.

4. Ketner was also an out lesbian.
She used her own money and got little help from the state or national parties. I wish she would run again.
