cross-posted from General Discussion: I happened to drive by the SC Statehouse Saturday afternoon and saw the teabagger demonstration which the papers said attracted 'hundreds' of participants. There may have been 200 at most, which I guess is actually hundreds. All were white, and most appeared to be well past retirement age. They had the usual signs: Stop Socialism, We want our country back, etc. If it hadn’t been so cold, I was going to make a sign and join them: “Stop Socialism: End Social Security and Medicare Now!” I wonder how the poor old fools who are barely scraping by now would feel about what pure capitalism would mean for them; I wonder if they would see the contradiction. Of course, I would be a hero to the Ron Paul devotees in the crowd for being philosophically consistent. One final observation: judging from the fact that there were far more Confederate flags than US flags, I bet half the crowd wouldn’t have been there if there weren’t a black man serving as President. That’s what they really mean by ‘take our country back.’
