Elimination of funds could hurt Charleston port improvement

WASHINGTON — U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint won one of the biggest legislative victories of his career Monday when Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell agreed to the South Carolina Republican’s demand for a freeze on spending earmarks. But DeMint’s stance could hurt the State Ports Authority’s ability to fund a study on improving the Charleston port.

An earmark ban could imperil funding for dozens of key projects in South Carolina, among them the U.S. Corps of Engineers funding of a study on deepening the Charleston port. State and local port officials say South Carolina stands to lose millions of dollars to other East Coast states with harbors deep enough to accommodate a new generation of larger cargo ships.
U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham, a Republican from Seneca, had raised the Charleston port project as an example of why some spending earmarks are important.
<snip>DeMint’s triumph underscored his increased clout after five ultraconservative candidates to whom he’d contributed millions of dollars won election to the Senate on Nov. 2.
"It’s symbolic of waste up here, and people are annoyed by that,” said Sen.-elect Rand Paul of Kentucky, one of the Tea Party favorites DeMint had funded. “People think spending is out of control.”
http://www.thestate.com/2010/11/16/1563793/demint-wins-earmark-freeze.html#ixzz15Rrqnk59Since when is job creation considered "waste"? Deminted should be hounded about this. Reporters should be asking why he is supporting job killing policies for political clout? YouWilsonLie Haley and the soon to be ex love gov, should be criticizing this move. A deeper port would allow for more ships to come into the harbor, more people would be needed to unload those ships, businesses around the port would see an increase in customers and need to hire more people accordingly. It is not like the unemployment rate in SC is higher than the national average...oh, wait it is.
As long as deminted supports the teabaggers anti gay agenda; who needs a job?
