I hope everybody is going to vote for medical marijuana
It would be a real drag if South Dakota became the first state to defeat a medical marijuana initiative.

If you want to help out, go to this web site: http://sdmedicalmarijuana.org/

1. If you're well-informed on the issue, write a LTE
Talk to your neighbors, relatives, fellow congregants, co-workers. You know the drill.

2. I certainly plan on voting in favor of it,
although, in this state, I wouldn't hold out too much hope of its actually passing. The opposition is also doing a damn good propaganda and spin job, making it sound as if people could get reefer anytime and in any amount and would fill the streets smoking it, that high schools would become nothing more than huge venues to buy, sell and smoke it, that kids would steal their grandparent's social security checks to buy it, that the state would descend into anarchy, chaos, madness, etc., etc., etc., yaddayaddayaddayadda, pick your smear and fear tactic.

My boyfriend has glaucoma and may very well need to use it someday and it irritates the holy living hell out of me that people who don't even know him and who think they know better than him think they have the right to make that decision for him.

3. More ammunition: Religious denominations support it
The Interfaith Drug Policy Initiative has a breakdown on the various denominations' positions on a range of drug policy-related issues. Here's what they have on medical marijuana:

Medical Marijuana
"Licensed medical doctors should not be punished for recommending the use of medical marijuana to seriously ill people, and seriously ill people should not be subject to criminal sanctions for using marijuana if the patient's physician has told the patient that such use is likely to be beneficial."

Supporters include:
United Methodist Church*
Presbyterian Church (USA)
United Methodist Board of Church and Society
Episcopal Church*
Unitarian Universalist Association
Union for Reform Judaism
United Church of Christ*
Progressive National Baptist Convention

Here's the link: http://www.idpi.us/resources/res_denominations.htm#medical

I am aware of no denomination that has taken a position opposing medical marijuana. The others just haven't dealt with it. The religious support is absolutely worth mentioning in letters, etc.

4. I just voted for it now!
And was very proud to do so. I'm really disgusted with the opposition's smear campaign against it, as well, making it sound as if everyone can just pick reefer up off the street and first graders will all be smoking it before long.
