1. I feel privileged to know
personally such a principled and dedicated activist as Sonia Santana. There are few people in Texas as devoted and tireless to the liberal cause as she.

(This is your cue, sonia, to blog more often.)

2. Wow, on the mention by OffTheKuff
I'm the one who is privileged with the mention by OffTheKuff.

My heart broke on that Thursday morning when the bill was not posted for the floor calendar. We had been lobbying pretty hard, until the very end in Kolkhorst's office, who is a member of the Calendar's committee and a co-author on the HB166. We know she asked Chairwoman Woolley to post the bill on the "final" supplemental calendar. Just goes to show you, personal favors even from committee members are hard to get. And it really was totally uncontroversial by the time it got to Calendars. Mary Denny had seen to that. The substitute bill she wrote in committee, that they voted out, made the paper ballot issue a study, and paper ballots were no longer a requirement. The Texas Legislature didn't even want to "study" the issue. Heck, why not just keep the status quo. We have control of the Legislature, why investigate anything.

Sonia
