Will Juan Garcia run against Cornyn in 2008
South Texas Chisme thinks Juan just might be planning to do that.

1. He first announced, by way of website, several months ago
that he might challenge Kay Bailey Perjury Technicality this year.

He's an excellent candidate, should make a great state representative, but I'd rather see Bill White run against Box Turtle.

3. Former chair of the TX Democratic Party
He preceeded Molly Beth Malcolm ('95 - '98, I think). Just re-elected mayor of Houston in something of a landslide.

His efforts to coordinate the city's response to the influx of about 150,000 Katrina evacuees was exemplary.

He is a centrist Democrat, somewhat conservative and most assuredly pro-business -- which means he's not as progressive as I prefer my Democrats to be -- but he is the kind that Republicans can vote for (and have, en masse), which means he can get elected in Texas rather easily, comparatively speaking. The sky's the limit actually for the guy. I think he wants to run for President some day soon (which could mean he won't ever run for the Senate ).

4. I like Bill White and he comes with the advantage of his own money
But I'm scared he won't run a grassroots statewide race. I could be wrong I don't know his campaign style, but I'm thinking that Juan Garcia has the advantage of having the Clarkies mobilized all over the state.

5. I was told yesterday that the Senate was out for White
our friend KM (who was driving General Clark, yesterday)and I were talking while we were waiting for cars to be brought around. I mentioned White and the Senate and he assured me that wasn't in White's plans and as we know, K has really close ties to the White organization.

11. Yes, I've heard mostly this same thing from others
Essentially that White, being a CEO of his company and mayor of the nation's fourth-largest city, wouldn't have any interest in being a "member of the club/debate society" that is the Senate. I'll bet that's why a governor-trial-balloon was floated in December, and why White could be a candidate for that office.

But in 2010? Against incumbent Governor Bell, or Gammage? Hard to picture that scenario so far ahead, and I just can't envison OTG or Kinky sitting there needing to be defeated, or even contemplate that -- God forbid -- Rick Perry will be winding down a decade in office then.

White could run for Governor from a Senate seat even if he'd only been in DC two years, if he was called to do so by the circumstances of the times in 2010.

The man really shouldn't rule anything out, and we absolutely need a high-profile someone to boot out Box Turtle.

6. I was all charged up to see him run this year.
When some people put up a website saying Garcia was going to run for Senate this year, I was really excited and it was a disappointment to see that website pulled.

If he runs for Senate in 2008, I think Texas would be very lucky, indeed!

7. I'm really glad Juan is running against Seaman instead of Hutchison.
I think he'd have been a really long shot against KBH whereas I think he'll whip Seaman, and I think it's a better beginning to what will be a long and distinguished political career to start with a local race and win rather than jumping into a losing statewide race.

"We need to help Juan whip Seaman" sounds a bit colorful.

Czolgosz, I just noticed you started that!

10. "Sink Gene Seaman"
or "Scuttle Gene Seaman".

Juan's a Navy pilot, right? All kinds of opportunities there with a nautical theme, and perfect for Corpus and all those vets down there; "Garcia launches broadside on Seaman's voting record" comes immediately to mind.

"SH-32 challenger swamps incumbent on education"

"Seaman attacks on Garcia backfire" ... uh oh.

"Garcia's campaign torpedos explode on Seaman" ... oops.

12. How about Garcia is the real navy man.
Seaman is not a 'seaman'.

13. According to those who claim to know
Garcia wasn't planning on running in 06 for US Senate.

They may have been right, I actually took a look at it and it didn't have ANY information that is required for a federal election.

Juan has a very bright future in Texas Politics. I'd love to see him run for US Senate, but 08 might be too soon. That is, unless Cornyn gets caught with some Abramoff on his hands.

;)

14. Oh we know Cornyn had Abramoff all over his hands
The problem is making it stick. The voter's in Texas need to strongly believe that he's corrupt. I think people have caught on that he's an idiot. He has one of the lowest approval ratings of Senators in the whole country. Now we have two and a half years to dig up more dirt on Cornyn's involvement with Reed, the Christian Coalition and Abramoff in closing the Tigua Casino.

No Picnic at Speaking Rock
Washington lobbyists shakedown Indian casinos

As Texas Attorney General, John Cornyn wasn’t the first public official in Texas to oppose Indian gaming. Ann Richards declared it illegal when she was the state’s governor. As did Dan Morales, when he was attorney general. But Cornyn relentlessly pursued the tribe, which had become a big contributor to Democrats after the casino opened in 1993. Shortly after taking office in 1999, he filed suit in federal court, seeking to shut the tribe’s casino down.
(snip)
Abramoff and Scanlon did not want to see Cornyn discouraged or slowed down. Their biggest paying client was the Coushatta tribe of Louisiana, which considered any casino in Texas a threat to its Interstate 10 gambling market. Cornyn’s lawsuit was the quickest way to put the Tiguas out of business. If they could help Cornyn kill the Tigua casino, they would have a federal court order declaring Indian gaming in Texas illegal.
