When I read Susan McDougal's book, "The Woman Who Wouldn't Talk", I was in tears half the time. I have to admit, the other half, I was laughing. She has a great sense of humor, which is probably what got her through more than 5 years of harassment, by Federal Prosecutor Kenneth Starr.
She tells of the moves from one Federal prison to another, in an attempt to put more miles between her and her family, who were devoted and so proud of her refusal to lie. It didn't work. A couple of her brothers relocated themselves, to be where she was, so as to be there to visit and others (seven siblings)made sure, one of them was always there, for every court appearance, over the years. She describes the conditions she and other women faced in the prison system, but come hell or high water, Ken Starr couldn't break her and get her to lie before the grand jury, to bring down Bill and Hillary Clinton, no matter how much of our tax dollars he spent.
I had a chance to talk with her, when she came to Houston to introduce her brother, Jim Henley who is running for Congress in CD 7. They share a lot of the steel, compassion and humor. She has now dedicated herself to exposing the system and the treatment of the women caught in it. In autographing my book, she wrote: "These stories of law, of politics, of life, changed my heart forever."
I truly think, when dealing with a woman, it becomes personal, when the government can't break them. Like "how dare SHE defy us."
