1. From the Corpus Christi Caller-Times
Nueces County commissioners could help Rangel School

The Pharmacy School is not in Nueces County, so expect some resistance. Hopefully enough people will realize that is it a benefit to the whole area. The Caller-Times leans Republican and likes to bash Terry Shamsie every chance it gets. He's not running for reelection, which frees him to make some bold moves -- like helping the Pharmacy School and appointing a woman as interim Nueces County Sheriff. Terry's a good guy and I hope he decides to run for public office again.

4. Representative Aaron Pena on the school
http://acapitolblog.blogspot.com/2006/02/nueces-county-commissioners-could-help.html
Most recently some of us had hoped that some interim funding could come the Texas A&M System. Texas A&M University System spokeswoman Terri Parker commented on the commissioners' court action as being, "very generous and very much appreciated, assuming the state provides the necessary funding for the school."

Well this is good news and those of us committed to this project have to keep moving and working toward success. The need is there. The students are there. We the state just have to do our part.

Representative Pena reads the South Texas Chisme too!

2. That's great news.
The county commissioners should be applauded for putting that surplus to good use. And how fitting that the school should be named after one of the hardest working representatives, there ever was. Rest in peace, Irma Rangel.

While looking up some information on her, I found this on Congressman Ruben Hinojosa's site. She also had a post office named after her!

http://hinojosa.house.gov/news/speech.cfm?id=640
Irma Rangel was the first Mexican-American woman elected to the Texas House of Representatives, where she served the people of the great state of Texas for 26 years.

During her tenure she devoted her efforts to increasing the educational attainment of Hispanics, empowering Texas’ youth with the tools they need to succeed and bringing economic development to Texas.

She was proud of her legislation that ensured that all Texas high school seniors who graduated in the top ten percent of their class will be able to attend any public university in the State of Texas.

As a former teacher, she knew that the economy of Texas depends on creating a highly educated, diverse workforce.

3. The deal can be cancelled within 30 days,
so don't get your hopes up. From KRISTV.COM in Corpus Christi, County Commissioners make deal with TAMUK worth $3 million. If they had just put the new Pharmacy school in Midland there wouldn't be any problem with funding. Republicans don't give a crap about south Texas. Why should they when so many of the folks down here can't be bothered to vote. (See South Texas Chisme, " Getting Hispanics to vote")

6. That's an interesting discussion at Aaron Pena's blog, and it's nice to
see you folks at South Texas Chisme get a well-deserved shout out.
