Councilman focused on public service since young age
SAN MARCOS, Texas -- Chris Jones was 8 years old when his parents took him to the state Capitol and he caught his first glimpse of his future.

Peering over the railing of the public gallery above the Senate floor, the boy from the Panhandle town of Seminole was fascinated by the lawmakers arguing below. Later that day, when Sen. Teel Bivins of Amarillo told him how he worked with people on issues from agriculture to economic development, he was hooked.

"I loved it," Jones said. "It was one of those things you leave and say, 'One day I'm going to work there.' "

Jones isn't there yet, but at 23, he's already a San Marcos City Council member _ he won the seat last year while he was still a Texas State University student _ and a veteran of a half-dozen campaigns for office.
