Great news! Another Obama endorsement.

http://www.mysanantonio.com/news/politics/stories/MYSA0...

WASHINGTON – Illinois Sen. Barack Obama picked up a key endorsement Monday from Rep. Charlie Gonzalez, D-San Antonio, who said he backs the Illinois senator for the Democratic nomination for president.

"Senator Obama brings all these new fresh faces,’’ Gonzalez told the San Antonio Express-News. "He has a wider audience. He has the greater potential to engage a greater number of people.’’

The endorsement by Gonzalez comes one day after Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., announced a presidential campaign swing through South Texas that will include San Antonio, Corpus Christi and McAllen.

Both campaigns are ramping up their efforts in Texas in advance of the March 4 primary. There are 228 Democratic delegates at stake in Texas.

Hispanics are expected to make up roughly 25 percent of the Democratic primary vote in Texas, prompting Clinton and Obama to establish campaign offices in San Antonio, El Paso and the Rio Grande Valley.

Clinton has received the endorsement of former San Antonio Mayor Henry Cisneros, who served as housing secretary under President Bill Clinton. Others endorsing Sen. Clinton include Rep. Solomon Ortiz, D-Corpus Christi, and Rep. Ruben Hinojosa, D-Mercedes.

7. Senator Kirk Watson for Obama
I posted this on the newspaper thread but it makes more sense to keep them here, since they are individual endorsements.

Endorsing Obama this morning.

From his Watson Wire newsletter
I am proud to support Senator Barack Obama for President of the United States.

Senator Obama offers this nation a new beginning. His leadership will tap our potential and give us hope.

He will help us to reject the poison politics of the past, and he will demand the solutions that will chart our future. Following his lead, we can shed the labels that divide us and unite for change.

Make no mistake, this is a movement rooted in policy as much as spirit. And in Senator Obama, we have found our leader.

Senator Obama will seize opportunities for a strong 21st Century America. He will create a foreign policy that strengthens and protects us. He will advocate for universal health care that works and makes sense. He will invest in the purest form of economic development – our teachers, schools and universities. And he will support clean power and technologies that will save our planet and our economy in this new century.

At this unique moment in our history, Senator Obama is focused on possibilities, not politics. He offers solutions that will unify our country and lead us into the future.

Perhaps most of all, he knows that hope matters.

Senator Obama offers hope – for peace, for security, for unity, for real solutions that address real needs, and for a nation that honors and fulfills the value of every one of us.

That hope is real, and it is important. It matters and has always mattered, but it has never mattered more than it does now.

So please join me, and millions more like me, in supporting Barack Obama on March 4.

Kirk Watson

Burnt Orange Report Endorses Barack Obama for President
by: Burnt Orange Report
Wed Feb 13, 2008 at 09:00 AM CST

Our hope for our country is that people will once again believe that government can be an instrument of good.

Our hope for our country is that people will set aside their fears of progress to see that we are all capable of good.

Our hope for our country is that people will remember that though we are many voices, we are all one body and one spirit, united in the common pursuit of an American dream where there are no limits to what we can achieve when we work together for the good of each other.

Senator Barack Obama understands these hopes. He believes in these hopes, and he is mobilizing a nation to achieve these hopes together. Burnt Orange Report endorses Senator Barack Obama for United States President, and the hope he brings to our country.

10. Democracy for Texas (DFT) Members for Obama
We asked, you answered. Loud and clear. The winner of our presidential poll is Senator Barack Obama, with 73.2% of the 2,760 votes cast.

As much as the margin of victory, we were impressed by the passion of Obama voters and their excitement about the future. In a world where cynicism about politics has become the norm, it is refreshing to see optimism, hope, and the belief that each of us can make a difference. Or, to paraphrase Senator Obama's comments last week: "We are the ones we've been waiting for."

It's a particular joy to watch the young people who are engaged in this campaign, many of whom cut their political teeth in Howard Dean's campaign. They're not just talking, they're assuming a leadership role. We couldn't be prouder.

But it's not just young people. One slightly older Obama supporter told us:

"I'm a 73-year-old Yellow Dog Democrat and this is the first time I have been truly excited with a candidate for president since 1960."
We understand. We're "fired up and ready to go" ourselves, and looking forward to working with everyone - regardless of your preference in the poll - to elect a Democrat in November.

12. Jim Hightower endorses Obama
The Nation Magazine
TEXAS POPULIST BOOST FOR OBAMA FROM HIGHTOWER...
(snip)
In March of 2008, Hightower will be in the thick of it again.

The Austin-based populist will be campaigning in Texas for Barack Obama. And it will mean something, since Hightower has not forgotten what he learned about the political landscape by winning two statewide elections in the 1980s and serving as an essential player on more than a few campaigns since then.

Texas is supposed to be Hillary Clinton country. She's got what are referred to as "demographic advantages." Translation: The large Hispanic population in the Lone Star state is expected to back her on March 4 when Texans vote in a "beauty-contest" primary and then choose delegates at evening caucuses.

Hispanic support has been critical to Clinton's viability, helping the New York senator to carry California, Arizona and other key states on Super Tuesday.

But Hightower thinks Obama can compete in Texas by building a coalition that looks a little like the "rainbow" of old -- and a lot like the coalitions that just gave the senator big wins in Maryland and Virginia. The Obama campaign is listening. Indeed, the candidate has started slipping references to the state into his campaign speeches. Obama plans to play in Texas, as he will do so with Hightower at his side.

"The Obama campaign is a phenomenon," says Hightower, who will make his formal endorsement soon but spoke this week with Laura Flanders and this writer on Radio Nation.

14. Austin Mayor Will Wynn endorses Obama
Wynn is an Independent.

Post from Greg Hauenstein's Blog:
Austin Mayor Will Wynn Endorses Barack Obama

Wynn cited Obama’s commitment to uniting Americans behind an energy policy that protects our environment and ensures our long-term national security.

"For too long, we’ve allowed old divisions to hold us back," Wynn said. "Recently I’ve had conversations about energy policy with presidential candidates from both parties, and I believe Senator Obama is the only person who can move us forward on this critical issue".

"Barack Obama gets it. He offers a commitment to confront our energy challenges in ways that will unite our country, help our economy flourish and protect our planet and national security for the next generation and beyond."

Wynn has chaired the Energy Committee of the U.S. Conference of Mayors since 2004, and was instrumental in passing energy-efficiency grant legislation as part of the 2007 Energy Independence and Security Act. If fully appropriated, Austin would gain more than $20 million to help fund local efficiency efforts.

Postcards from the Lege blog 2/15/08
Large union goes for Obama

Sen. Barack Obama this afternoon received a highly sought endorsement from the Service Employees International Union, which bills itself as the nation’s largest union, with 1.9 million members.

Union officials expect the backing to help Obama in Texas and Ohio, where opinion polls have him trailing Sen. Hillary Clinton. The union has strong ties in Latino communities, considered a Clinton stronghold, and a concentrated presence in Houston, Dallas and San Antonio, officials said.

18. Houston Chronicle endorses Obama
I'm keeping all the endorsements on this thread, and I just saw this posted on another thread here on DU.
Houston Chronicle 2/16/08
For Obama
The Chronicle endorses the senator from Illinois for the Democratic presidential nomination.

The presidency of the United States is a powerful bully pulpit. The occupant of the White House must not only issue orders, but also inspire and advocate for all Americans.

Of the two finalists for the Democratic presidential nomination, the Chronicle believes Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois is best-qualified by life experience, skill and temperament to be the standard bearer for his party. In a conference call, Obama told the Chronicle editorial board that "more than any other candidate, I can bridge some of the partisan as well as racial and religious divides that have developed in this country that prevent us from getting things done."

(snip)
However, there is a decisive difference. Obama vows to reach out to independents and Republicans with a message of inclusion and cooperation. He offers a historic opportunity to elevate national political dialogue to a higher ground. Those who insist on vitriol and obstructionism would be marginalized.

Sweet!!!

Obama offers Democrats inspirational leadership

Democratic presidential hopeful Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., offers voters a chance to get beyond bitter partisanship and polarized politics.

Democrats are watching one of the most exciting presidential nominating contest in years unfold in a series of state primaries across the nation. The two Democrats left in the race, Sens. Hillary Ridgan Clinton of New York and Barack Obama of Illinois, now bring their campaigns to Texas. This is a memorable moment for Texans whose voices have been irrelevant in past presidential primary elections. But in this March 4 primary, Texas Democrats have a chance to make history.

(snip)
The differences on policy issues between Obama and Clinton are all but neglible. Both offer similar positions on universal health insurance, the Iraq war, the economy, immigration reform and the other major issues. The difference is how they would approach the presidency. Clinton is a two-term senator and former first lady. The 60-year-old Clinton touts her experience as the edge. Obama, the choice of the Editorial Board, brings something to American politics that has been missing for a long time: the ability to inspire. The campaign of the 46-year-old Illinois senator has demonstrated his ability to bring new voters to the polls in every primary held so far. This is evidence of Obama's ability to reawaken faith in representative democracy among Americans sick of leadership that depends on division and demonizing of opponents.

Fort Worth Star-Telegram 2/17/08
Transformation time

Texas voters have two remarkable candidates from which to choose in the March 4 Democratic presidential primary. Regardless of the outcome of this state's vote and those across the nation, history will be made.

Both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama represent change, but in decidedly different ways.

Supportive politicians, pundits and writers of letters to newspaper editors have defined that difference as transitional vs. transformative. Clinton is the former; Obama the latter.

Right now, America needs transformation.

(snip)
Although he was not in the Senate at the time of the vote authorizing the invasion of Iraq, Obama was an early critic of the war, viewing it as an unnecessary strategic mistake that would damage America. Clinton is still trying to talk her way around her support for the invasion; it's a scar that won't fade for many Democratic voters.

Waco’s Edwards endorses Obama

By Nathan Wade | Monday, February 18, 2008, 12:31 PM

U.S. Rep. Chet Edwards, D-Waco, today endorsed Barack Obama’s bid for the White House, saying the U.S. senator from Illinois would work across party lines to unite the country.

Edwards, who represents Texas’ 17th Congressional District, which includes the ranch home of President George W. Bush, released the following statement with his endorsement announcement:

"As the father of two young sons, I care deeply about the future of our nation, and that is why I am endorsing Sen. Barack Obama for president of the United States," Edwards said. "I believe Sen. Obama can bring about real change in Washington — change that will make a positive difference for average working Americans struggling to keep up with the high costs of health care, gasoline and education."

22. Mexican American Democrats endorsed Senator Barack Obama
Sam Graham-Felsen's Blog on my.barackobama.com

Oldest Hispanic Group within the Texas Democratic Party Makes Endorsement Following Meeting in Dallas

AUSTIN – Yesterday, the Mexican American Democrats endorsed Senator Barack Obama in his campaign for president, citing his longstanding relationship with Hispanic community and commitment to improving the lives of Hispanic men, women and children in Texas and across America.

The Mexican American Democrats believe that Senator Obama’s experience bringing Americans of all ages, religions, races and ethnicities together make him the best candidate to make progress on the issues that matter to Hispanics in Texas and across America. Obama’s leadership in the U.S. Senate on comprehensive immigration reform and his specific plans to strengthen our schools, bring about universal healthcare, and provide tax relief for working families show us that he is truly committed to improving the lives of Hispanics and all Americans.

In the face of a tight primary race in Texas, the Hispanic community’s participation at the polls will be crucial in deciding who will be the nominees of the Democratic Party. The mission of the Mexican American Democrats is to unify and empower the Mexican American-Latino community by increasing voting numbers to achieve political influence on issues that affect the Hispanic Community, as well as promote Hispanics as political candidates and appointees.

On Saturday February 16, the Mexican American Democrats’ endorsement committee met in Dallas to screen Democratic candidates running for office. Candidate response and participation was overwhelming. The committee heard from candidates on issues of importance to Mexican American Democrats in writing, as well as in person via conference call.
