Interesting Race in Waco
Searching through the state newspapers this morning and found this:

Local political battle focuses on private-school voucher vote

By David Doerr, Waco Tribune-Herald, 02/17/06

As he campaigns to win the right to represent McLennan County in the Texas Legislature, Jonathan Sibley hopes to tap into resentment involving a program widely panned by educators that his opponent supported three years ago: private-school vouchers.

While most public education advocacy groups oppose vouchers, deeming them a “line-in-the-sand issue,” two-term state Rep. Charles “Doc” Anderson, R-Waco, has no qualms about his votes to support a pilot initiative he says was opposed by people who were “defending the status quo.”

Vouchers that would help parents pay for a private school education with public funds was hotly debated in 2005.

Any Waco people here that know about this race?

1. This is a race in the Republican primary
Our Democratic party is so fractured that it can't even field a candidate for the general election.

2. Yeah, it's GOP primary
I was just wondering what the feeling is there about how this race is going.

Also, noticed that Obama is setting up a field office in Waco; that seemed kinda strange.

3. Sibley is advertising on TV, Anderson is not.
Sibley is the son of David Sibley former State Senator from Waco.

Anderson is a cranky old conservative who hasn't made any friends here (or in Austin). And Sibley comes from a moderate Republican family background. He is 30 years younger too.

I think the Republican party structure would like to see Sibley win because Anderson is not a credit to their reputation. But they would never be indiscreet enough to openly subvert an incumbent.

I'm picking Sibley, but I vote in the Democratic Primary, so I don't count.

4. Doc Anderson is definitely a bore
Supposedly, Burka was going to put him on the furniture list, but they wouldn't let him since they had written an article about him battling the coal plants.

Working in the Lege, I like to keep an eye on these various races to see who's going out, especially those in the furniture category.

5. Obama is WORKING Texas!
I went to an Obama Precinct Captain Training in Galveston today. They said offices are opening all over the state, and trainings are being given all over too. This is an amazingly organized campaign!

6. Waco Tribune Herald endorsed Anderson
But remember this is the same paper that publishes Ted Nugent's column.
