Texans: Would you prefer a pure primary system in 2012,
...or to keep your mixed primary/caucus system?

1. I like the mixed system
Edited on Thu Mar-06-08 07:58 PM by cosmik debris
It rewards activism and I am an activist.

Edit: And we don't just caucus in presidential election years.

5. Keep the Mix
I like the primary/caucus too. I think a lot of the problems could be fixed by holding the caucus portion on a Saturday. This would allow more people to participate. What do you guys think? DO they need to be on the same day? It would be interesting to see how many early voters came back to caucus on Tuesday night.

6. Keep the Texas Two-Step, but for the love of Molly Ivins...
...can the statewide political system please pull its head out of its ass and develop something vaguely resembling military precision? We've got a state full of pissed-off precinct delegates.

7. Keep it.
If we drop any half of our hybrid system, I say let it be the primary. I wouldn't mind being like Iowa.

I love the way the caucus brought out the closet Democrats. I wonder how many times Tuesday night it was said, "I thought I was the only Democrat around here." This will bring so many new people into activism, identify more of our base for fundraising and GOTV, and build a grassroots precinct organization, assuming the precinct chair mines this boatload of data. It makes politics participatory, not a spectator sport. Like the old-time town halls.

10. I'm with you, TTC.
If we change, lose the primary and go pure caucus.

9. Nope, I like it just the way it is, however, voters need to educate themselves more
about the process.

12. The one change I would make
Change it so the precinct convention/caucus doesn't happen the evening after the primary. If you're a precinct chair or election worker or activist, chances are you've been working since 7 in the morning and by the time the convention starts your reserves of sanity are pretty thin.

13. An even better change would be
to allow 8 hour shifts. It would be easier to get volunteers if they only had to commit part of a day instead of a double full time shift. I wasn't able to go to the precinct convention because of work commitments, but my friend who was elected precinct convention chair said that, at tonight's chair meeting, the county Democratic chair announced that a number of long-time precinct officers had resigned in the wake of all the work they had to do Tuesday. It was just too hard on them. What can we do to make the workload more reasonable?

14. some kind of improved....
caucus system would be great...
i think it was good to have to get out and meet the neighbors.
I like this idea of a mixed system...
...but at the same time, to make people show up twice is inconvenient, if not disenfranchisement.
the whole point of early voting in the primary is so that everyone has a chance to vote in case they have to be out of town (or whatever)....doesn't seem fair for the caucus.

15. We have to keep it
Just make the sign in faster
It makes the precinct much tighter, the neighborhood for that matter

16. If we keep it, could we caucus the following weekend
Got up at 5:30am, at the polls by 6:15, finished closing the polls down at 7:30 pm. Was supposed to run the caucus at that point, until someone offered to do it for me. Had never met them, but they did a better job than I could have done.
In 2004, no one attended the caucus and I was relieved because I had no idea what to do. This time we had 92 people. 59 for Obama, 33 for Clinton

17. What I really wish
Is that we allowed only REGISTERED Democrats to vote in our primary. I believe the Republicans changed the outcome for our Presidential nominee in Texas. And most of them will vote for McCain in November. I heard them talking about there strategy openly, and laughing about being a Democrat for a day, as I worked at the election.
