8. Harris here
Edited on Thu Mar-06-08 09:44 PM by PDittie
Nation's third-largest county. 405,784 Democratic voters in March 4th's primary (Obama 56% Clinton 43%). That would be more than twice as many as Travis, just FYI.

Re-bragging: Harris County is equal to two Travis Counties -- as it compares to Democratic voters last Tuesday.

edit for cool link to above data and much more: http://politics.nytimes.com/election-guide/2008/results/states/TX.html

I love your turnout numbers PDittie, but Travis' percentage of registered voters voting was 30%. What was yours?

Until this year, of course.

If Harris could turn out 30% we might have three or four Travis Counties. :grouphug:

Plano Dems showed out in force last Tuesday...I have never, ever seen the school and it's parking lot so crowded! They were parked in the grass/mud/illegal spots in the parking lot. I had to switch over to 4 wheel drive to get up onto the grass and thru the mud just to find a place to park!
The energy that crowd put out could have lit up Collin County for a year. I hope their enthusiasm lasts til November!!!!!

Are you on the list either as a delegate or alternate?

I hope that you would come. It is important to finish the job. But if something comes up where you can't be there, please be sure to tell your PCT chair so that if you're a delegate for example, that they can move an alternate into your position.

Have a good weekend!

75. Great scott. Where is that, exactly?
And to answer your question:

Contact your delegation chair or anybody in your delegation and see if you can find out where it is -- check BurntOrangeReport blog, they have a listing of where everything is. Find out who your temporary convention chair is and ask if you can be on a committee, if you are interested. You might want to check out the Texas Democratic Party website --- click around there and read, there's lots of good info about committees and other things. Then, decide if you want to go to State and lobby your other members of your delegations to be a delegate to state, if you do! ;)

Your primary responsibility is just to show up. So don't worry if things sound confusing, just ask here if you have any more questions!

102. A SD-7 Dem here
Edited on Sun Mar-30-08 09:49 AM by TomBall Democrat
went to the convention yesterday - still tired.

We packed the Sam Houston Race Track (horse track) pavillion. Logistical problems were rough - we didn't have enough room or adequate technology. Thought often yesterday of Will Rogers - no organized party - the Dems.

Lots of new faces in the room - most Obama delegates.

But most stayed - for HOURS. It was after 5PM when we were able to START caucusing.

I'm worn from standing in line -but energized to have so many people eager to play.

Overall, I saw people of strong persuasion on both sides play well together - and that gives me hope for unity once we have a candidate.

Tired, but in a good way.

Peace from Harris County. This is a good day to be a Democrat.

When I left.

My precinct - combined with another - went Obama.

Suspect, based on numbers of people - that the SD as a whole went for Obama with about a 30% lead.

But that is based on visual and word of mouth with other delegates - not official.

107. SD 7 - Obama delegate here. I concur, SD 7 obviously went for Obama.
3 Obama delegates from my precinct stayed until 7:30 pm, still didn't have final numbers.
Resolutions were still going strong at that time.

I can't begin to describe how exhausted I was yesterday and still am today - wow!

84. Montgomery County
Hey isn't that the county where the republican party chair claimed there were many, many republicans crossing over and voting in the Democratic primary?

Check out this earlier DU thread

Give us a report next week after the convention and let us know if you saw any of those republicans in your county convention process too.

95. Hi Sonia!
My beloved local Democrats are running me around in circles lately. I've not even had time for my favorite forum, LBN. I love it! Well, I love it so long as they actually get their sweet Democratic butts to the County Convention. I want all my delegate slots filled for my precinct. Period. I've made it a personal mission. It's what? Midnight? I finally got off the phone with last one for the night and I have a call list for tomorrow to still recontact. I've got some squirmers and two Clinton delegates who withdrew today. I also have several alternates on both sides who won't answer their darn phones! Don't they realize I'm not beyond showing up at their door?

When I was picking my username the acronym was actually on my mind. I thought it might make people recall who I was a bit more on this vast board. :P

105. AT LARGE COMMITTEE VOTING FOR THEMSELVES....
So, I don't know if any other state conventions saw this but it was definitely a point of contention for many of us....after they announced the at large delegates and had them identified... conveniently almost the ENTIRE nomination committee stood....how is this BALANCING our votes... granted the committee was split equitable amongst the candidates but I (as I heard many others state as well) believed that they would be an unbiased committee to select reps NOT INCLUDING THEMSELVEs to represent us....

Hopefully in the future this little loophole can be closed...

~Sorry if this has been posted on the wrong board... couldn't figure out how to create a new post...

108. Welcome to DU and the Texas forum houstondem00!
First of all the welcome :hi:

As a new member you are not allowed to start a new thread, that's why you couldn't figure out how to post a separate thread. So this thread is fine. Once you build up a few posts you'll be able to start a thread on your own.

I can say that as someone that served on the Nominations committee in SD25 in Travis that none of our committee elected ourselves to the at large positions. And I could easily have made the "minority goal" since we needed to elect Hispanic females for Obama in our SD.

I am very disappointed that your committee chose to use their power in that manner. I can understand your frustration. Next time make sure you volunteer for the committee. You can do that by calling your party chair before the next county convention in 2009 and offering to serve. Of course you have to be elected by your PCT to go to the convention. Obviously you know how that process works since you got there this time.

Be the change you want to see!

Sonia

109. Thanks!!! But can I report this...
Thanks for the great advice... I will definitely look into this.

But (1) is this legal/possible? and (2) can I report this anywhere to try to change the loophole if it is possible and/or report if it is not possible and is an abuse by these members?

FYI- I also notice some precincts chairs took the high road and chose not to run for state delegate while others did. To those precincts chairs who gave the other members of their delegations the opportunity to proceed to state, KUDOS!!!

I know this election year is hyped up and we are having great turnout.... BUT to see how desperate some people were to make it to state was RIDICULOUS!!! I heard reports of people CHANGING PRESIDENTIAL PREFERENCES to make it on to state....and I'm sure this will continue at state as I have heard a number of people say there main goal is to go to NATIONAL....

The whole reason you were chosen as a delegate was to help increase your candidates voting strength... WHY WOULD YOU CHANGE PREFERENCES TO ADVANCE FOR PERSONAL GAIN?

But as this was my first time at a caucus, I will say it was positive in many other regards... I learned so much more about the political arena, felt I made a difference, and plan to become more active in order to see positive change.

110. I think what they did was not nice and not good for the party
Edited on Sun Mar-30-08 07:12 PM by sonias
But I'm not sure that is was "illegal" under the TDP rules. Members of the committee can certainly throw their nominations into the ring for consideration, and the committee votes as a group on those nominees.

Probably the only way to "close the loophole" you feel exists is to get a rule introduced and passed that specifically forbid members of the committee to nominate and vote for themselves. Not an easy thing to do, but it's certainly not out of the question.

Also I meant to say the next caucus conventions for Governor happen in 2010, not 2009 like I wrote above.

I agree with you that just because you serve on a committee or you're the PCT chair doesn't automatically mean you should have the inside track. Nothing is guaranteed, no one is "entitled" to anything.

I also agree with you that sitting PCT chairs that have gone to state conventions before did their PCT a great service by stepping aside to give some of the new members a chance. But let's not knock all of them. You do need experienced people to go and show others in the SD conventions at state how to get things done.

If this was your first time caucusing - wow - you hit the ground running at 100 mph. This size of caucuses are not the norm, and I can see where the problems might leave some people wondering why the heck we do this. So congratulations to you for participating, surviving and feeling you made a difference! You did.

Two years from now come back for the smaller gubernatorial caucus conventions and you will be a pro by then.

Welcome to Texas Democratic politics - a full contact sport in 2008!

Sonia
