Glen Maxey is handing out maps on BOR. Pick one up if you want to play the game smartly at the State Convention.

Wanna Go to Denver? Here's a Roadmap!

As delegate lists from the County and Senate Conventions make their way to the Texas Democratic Party, people are getting ready to compete to be the warm bodies in those highly coveted seats in Denver.

Here's the handy guide to everything you need to know.
First, you must apply after April 21, 2008 to declare your candidacy by downloading the application form from the Texas Democratic Party site, filling it out, getting it notarized and delivering it to the TDP between April 21st and May 21st at 5:00 pm. Do not send it BEFORE the start or you'll have to do it all over again. They won't be returning them for re-submission, so do it right the first time. Coming in early could get yours disqualified just as coming in late would.

A point about the form:

There are three types of Delegates for which a person can run. Everyone should check the first and third category because everyone qualifies for them.

The first category is "Pledged Senatorial District" for election by your fellow Clinton or Obama folks in your Senate District. These are the 126 delegates allocated by the primary. More about this later in this post.

The second category is for 25 Pledged Party/Elected Officials. The division of Obama/Clinton in this group will be allocated by the sign-in at the State Convention.

The Nominations Committee considers elected officials who have applied in this order: Democratic mayors (even if elected non-partisan) in cities over 250,000. State legislators, then other state and local Democratic officials (these must be elected in a partisan election).

Glen rocks! :applause::applause::applause:

2. I printed out the form yesterday.
I would love to go to the National Convention, although there are only four slots available within my SD.

3. Oh and you have to split those too
Did you know about that? The allocation of delegates to National is based on the primary vote. So if your SD went very closely for one or the other. It's a straight split down the middle.

In SD25 our 6 delegates are going 3 for Obama and 3 for Clinton. We have no chance to increase our delegate allocation even though we have 60% of the delegates going to state. The election for national delegates is not a contested vote in the SD caucus with both camps. It's going to be done separately by both campaigns for each to elect their own.

You thought you had a small chance when it was 1 out of the full allocation, well now it's even less since it's probably 1 out of the half of the whole.

Take a look at Glen's spreadsheet on Google docs. This is the way the numbers are - these are fixed numbers. The only variable now is who the people are that get elected.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. The reality is though if you really want to go to Denber, you should just go. Don't set your heart on getting elected as a delegate. Just go and be there. It's not the party pays your way to the convention anyway.

4. I just checked out the fact sheet, although only pg 1 showed up
Well, that really sucks. One thing I don't understand.

Why is the alternate a Clinton slot?.?.? Our SD went overwhelmingly Obama.

I'm not sure if I would go to Denver. Hell, I don't have the funds to go to state, but trying to find ways to accomplish that goal.

5. What SD are you in?
It has to be an equal number of male/females.

Also keep in mind the allocation is based on the primary vote only. How did your SD vote on March 4th?

6. SD 12, and I'm not sure how the whole SD voted
So, if Clinton won most of SD votes, then that is why she would get the alternate?.?.?

I guess that makes sense.

7. Clinton must have won your SD
But not by enough to split the delegates any more than 50-50. So what she gets is the alternate as a bonus.

In our SD Obama won the primary vote but again not enough to get an extra delegate so it's a 50-50 split 3 to 3. But because he won the senate district he get the single alternate.

Them's the breaks.
