State education board member criticized for anti-public education writings

I didn't see this on the forum, so I thought I would go ahead and post this (forgive me if this has already been posted and discussed). The Chron's blog has this post about Cynthia Dunbar and some of her statements about public education. These were particularly disturbing:

'She calls public education a "subtly deceptive tool of perversion." The establishment of public schools is unconstitutional and even "tyrannical," she writes in the book, because it threatens the authority of families, granted by God through Scripture, to direct the instruction of their children.'

I don't understand how or why we can have someone overseeing the improvement of education who is so vehemently opposed to public education.

Here's an old Texas forum thread from Nov. about her:

There is no doubt the crazy Dunbar person has got to go. We need to recruit a good candidate to run against her and win.

2. Nutbar should stop thumping her Bible for a few minutes and peruse the Texas Constitution

Especially Article VII, which requires ". . . it shall be DUTY OF THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE to establish and make suitable provision for the support and maintenance of an efficient system of public free schools" How can something be "unconstitutional" if it is actually INCLUDED in the Constitution? (Cue exploding head)

4. Constitution? We don't need no stinkin' Constitution....

Let me explain this kind of people - we do what they say, they do what they want. If they feel like it, they say "God told me" instead of "I want." But it means the exact same thing.

But of course you knew that.... ;)
